Best motor to start off with?

JUst corius what would be the best year and sze to start off with.We have a 250xs right now and im just wondering bout the Yamaha now days.Ive had alot over teh years, all of which were carb motors. Are the 300 yammies teh best to start off with or are tehre stronger ones? What is thes best and easiest yamaha to build. This is for a boat that will run low 80's with a 300x.Its not a super fast hull just a very good do everything boat. Its a 22 velocity. Thanks for your ideas.

Very good question! If you are not concerned about fuel economy, I personally like the 3.1L Vmax OX66. You can easily turn a 200 into a 300hp with one of our Phase kits.

If you are concerned with fuel economy, I would start with a 225 or 250 HPDI Vmax and achive the same results as the 3.1L but it will require a little more money.

I came out of a 250XS, which I was a diehard Merc man. I have the 3.1 OX66 with a PhaseIII and absolutely love it. The gas mileage isnt as good on gas as the 250XS was, but it isnt bad either. As for power the OX66 is unbelievable, it will flat out run circles around that 250XS, like I said I was a huge Merc guy and this Yammy has really surprised me. The only thing that I miss about that Merc is the sound, it was like a symphany going on under that cowl. You will not miss that XS for a second, best of luck
PS Do a search on here, those OX66 Yammy's are absolutely bulletproof

Wayne, with a 225 ox66. What gain would I see in a phase I kit, and a flywheel? Would those be pretty good choices for smaller expense?
Don't want to sacrifice any durability, and like to improve mileage a little too.

I have a phase II on my 225 tuner, reeds, heads. I had it dynoed by the guys at HT and it dynoed 297+ at the crank before it was totally broken in. I love the motor and if I just back off the throttle a little I get grear MPG for the power I have.
