Problems with lower unit on a vz. Could the failure of the lower unit be caused by a misalinement of the drive shaft on the upper end? Could it cause enough vibration to cause the upper roller bearing to wear flat and to cause the gears to crack and chip?
George, not sure if thats possible or not, but I would think it would be pretty noisy if that bearing was failing. Also, if the shafts are not lined up exactly, it will bind everything up.
Do you have the lower unit torn down? If so, did it fail a gear or just the bearing? I would be happy to have a look at it for you if you want. Just let me know if I can help.

Thanks Matt, You will be seeing me very soon. Sent the lu back under warranty. New one is on its way. Will call you Friday for an appointment.
