    Pretty carboned up

Hey guys I removed the plugs on my HPDI today and fogged the internals. I did notice that the plugs and piston tops were pretty carboned up. I run ring free in every tank and fuel stabilizer. I am going to change the plugs after I burn the fogging oil off. Should I try a shock treatment on the next tank of fuel.

Ive got the same motor and it was looking really carboned up in the fall gonna try some of the spray sea foam through the intake in the spring to hopefully clear it out.

    Re: Pretty carboned up (falcooon)

Every hour on the engine has been run on Yamalube. First 72 hrs were ran on 87 octane which I can only assume was predominantly E-10. But the previous owner said he always ran ring free in every tank.. he even sent me with a couple bottles when I bought her. I have owned it since 72 hrs (June '11) and have ran ring free in EVERY tank and ran nothing but non ethanol fuel. Motor is believed to have around 85-90 hrs now.

I'd say you need to switch to Pennz syn bld and seafoam. Also use startron for E10.
Had very good luck using this combo.

I asked my mechanic the same thing about seeing the carbon on the plug tips and such. He informed me that that's the way the ringfree works. Burns it off and out the exhaust. Change the plugs yearly. I clean mine off when I winterize, so that when I burn off the fogging oil in Feb/Mar it gets a good hot clean spark. After that first trip, THEN I change the plugs for the upcoming season.

By the way, bought my boat/motor brand new (2003 225 HPDI/200 Pro XL Stratos) and from tank #1 starting with break in have ALWAYS used Yamalube and Ringfree. So this appears to be a normal thing. It's worked perfectly so far, why change things?

I noticed the same with my 2009 this fall when I removed the plugs. I may start running Seafoam in the gas next spring

I heard the same thing when I questioned about carbon build up and I'm not really buying it. I have ran ringfree and marine stabil in every drop of gas and with only 20 hrs there was some carbon build up. I ran a Merc before this Yamaha and in 100 hrs I didn't have that much carbon running quickleen and marine stabil. The weird thing is quickleen and ringfree are really close to the same product. I'm starting to think it is the yamalube...

running ring free in every tank is good practice, you should also do a shock treatment once a year, especially if you idle a lot. I'll tell you this from experience, if you decide to do a shock treatment, go ahead and buy a spare set of plugs. I couldn't believe how much carbon broke free after I did my first shock treatment on my OX-66.

    Re: Pretty carboned up (Stratos21XL)

Exactly what I was going to say. Carbon is unavoidable and especially if you idle a lot. Yamaha recommends shocking once a season and the ratio of ring free is very high compared to "maintenance" levels of ring free. It's somewhere around 2-3 ounces per gallon vs. an ounce for every 10 gallons.

Re: Pretty carboned up (Northeast Bassin)

I'd try switching to a semi-blend or full synthetic oil. Decarb with Ring free or BRP engine tuner down the throttle bodies. Let it sit overnight and restart in the AM or go to the lake and blow it out. Replace the plugs after the treatment. My also want to check your head temps to make sure the T-stats are opening properly.

BTW nice looking Hawk! Thought it was a Champ at quick look, what kind of numbers you getting out of it?

    Re: Pretty carboned up (ChampioNman)

I believe I will shock treat it in the spring, I had it out yesterday and it ran like a top. I am getting 68 mph full tank of gas, full load, and 2 people. With just me I have seen 73 mph @5700.

Don't think its a good practice to "fog"a HPDI Yamaha, could foul up the injectors. I usually spray Sea Foam in the cyclinders before storage.

    Re: Pretty carboned up (flippin136)

I am not fogging it through the intake.. just through the plug holes. All that does is coat the cylinder bore, and piston top

Nothig wrong with fogging through the intake. It will NOT go into the injectors just inside the crank case and cylinders.

Re: Pretty carboned up (Rich Z)

I'd rather not through any DI motor. I just wanted to keep any kind of corrosion out of the cylinders. She sits in a heated garage so I am probably over thinking it.

    Re: Pretty carboned up (HAWKHPDI)

It is not a problem shooting a Decarb solvent through the Throttle Bodies. I dosesn't mix with the fuel as it passes through the intake ports and into the combustion chamber. As the motor fires with FRESH fuel from the injectors AND you are only injecting short 2-3 second burst per TB there is no danger of messing up an injector. All you are doing is cleaning out the cylinder and rings. The tuner goes up with the intake swirl and is injected to the cyinder, the piston gets a minute dose of tuner, then as the piston makes its down stroke a bit more is taken in and the bottom side of the piston gets some freeing up both rings. One can of tuner is sufficient for a V-6 motor, at about the 3/4 level of the can. Remove the spark plugs and shoot a small amount down the plug hole while bumping the starter to rotate the pistons. When done, finger tight the plugs and spin the motor one more time with the plug wires off. Let it sit overnight. Pull the plugs, crank the motor to clear the cylinder. Install the plugs and connect the plug wires carry the boat to the lake and run the hell out of it. when done replace the old plugs.
