    Thrown Blades on Yamaha Props

Guys, I am having to show my insurance company that I did not hit a "submerged object" causing me to loose a blade on my prop and taking out my lower unit. If you have had this same problem, could you please post up the details. I have to build a case!

    Thanks

Even if you did hit a under water hazard, isn't that covered as well. Tell them to prove that you did hit an underwater hazard?????????

The reason is because I don't want to have the claim go against me (i.e. be seen as my fault)

A Letter from your dealer should be all you need!

Re: Thrown Blades on Yamaha Props (ncz20)

Thats the problem, my dealer convinced me it was my fault because (assuming here...) they didn't want to have to pay to fix it (this was the first trip on the boat for me, but it was a used boat). However, I did talk with a few mechanics that were close by and they said it is pretty common so I may try and get a letter from them. I just want all the evidence I can.

I even called Yamaha when it happened, and the guy said he had not heard about it happening and that I should just do the insurance thing

A month afterward, I am finding out its happened quite a bit!

Quickly go out and find yourself a Marine Surveyor to look at the damage. The insurance guy will see things his way (to the favor of the insurance company) and the marina will see things their way.

You want someone on your side, someone aligned to you and not their own company. Someone who has credentials to back up his conclusions.

Once you have a marine surveyor he will battle with your insurance company and they won't be able to snow him.

Trust me. I had a cracked hull and the mfg wanted to make repairs. The Marine Surveyor took a look and argued that it was more than a repair. Guess what, I got a new boat. Good investment.

what do the other blades look like? If you would have hit something hard enough to knock a blade off, there should be significant damage to the other blades also...If the other blades are ok, then there is no way you hit something that hard...

The other two blades look perfect. Not even a scratch on them!

I've read many posts about guys slinging blades on the M series. Most were when they were running them on the new big block HPDI's.

The day I got my 01 Skeeter, I threw a blade on a small block HPDI. Rest of the prop was perfect. Local Yamaha Dealer (not even a Skeeter dealer), said no problem, the extended warranty will cover it, and put me a new one on. About a year later, I just happened to notice a crack in one of the blades. No more M props for me.

If you hit something hard enuff to lose a blade .. your prop shaft's going to be bent also ... look at the exact spot where the blade came loose at .... see if you can see black metal .... I had a Merc prop do that ,,,, and you could definately tell where the bad metal was .. about an inch & a half long ....

I hit something in Weiss ,, right at take off .... bent propshaft , dinged blade ... $1500.00

I've heard of the M series slinging ears on the HPDIs.

Threw the end of a 25M off, out in open water. Didn't hit a thing. Dang, it was my faster M too. It's nothing more than a door weight now. Mines a screaming EFI.

Yup my 25m did the same thing, running at 63 mph at 5800 and threw the blade off about 3/4 inch from the hub

Not true... Infact they are known for throwing blades....

We see this happen all the time on the prop forum.

Do T1's throw blades in the same manner as M's?

    Re: (TexasCub)

All props can throw a blade... This is fatigue created from over trimming to get bow lift/speed, and surfacing the prop. The original T prop was so bad throwing blades they stopped making it and thickened the blades and have been making the T1 for years. They are better, but these hoss big blocks are tough on props.
