09 200 HPDI Water Pressure Question

Noticed something strange the past couple of times out. When I start my outboard it takes about 20-30 seconds for the PSI to start going up. I think that is pretty typical and it will go up to about 5 PSI at idle and neutral. After about 2 minutes though it starts dropping and gets down really close to zero. After it drops to zero even ideling in gear it stays really close to zero. Full throtle I'm getting about 12 and when I am just on plane I am getting 8-10. Poppit valve need cleaning or maybe a new impellar? I've heard with hot water temps the water pressure drops on these outboards. This spring I was getting 20+

With the hot water temps they will show a lot less pressure due to the thermostats opening a LOT sooner.Your pressure sounds the same as my 90.

Do they just not show as much pressure or is there actually less pressure? If I look back at the stream it looks pretty good.

There is actually less pressure because the t-stats are open and not restricting it nearly as much.

My boat is in the shop right now with the same type of problem. I will let you know what it takes to fix it.

If you don't have an overheat warning going off,you don't have a problem. The cooler water temps will raise your water pressure.

Re: 09 200 HPDI Water Pressure Question (Jim 294)

My alarm was going off, which is why it was in the shop. I had a good stream on idle but zero on the gage. At wot i was on seeing about 7 psi. Tech thought the impellar was the issue so we changed it. No change. After several attempts in the lower unit, he checked the poppit. To our suprise the were several shell fragments preventing it from functioning. Picked those up on a recent trip to G Ville. O well, it was worth the trouble. During the summer you will see lower psi but it does not hurt to give the poppit a check. I am back up to 15 psi and no alarms. 200 V Max hpdi.

    My 2009 200 HPDI

    Water temps below 80 Degrees--water pressure 20+
Once you cross 80 Degrees it starts going down. This past Saturday 81 degrees-12 psi, week before 84 degrees-10psi, back in June 90+ degrees--7-9 psi (finally got some rain and cooled the water off a little). My Dealer also said that as long as the buzzer is not going off, there's no problem. He said the Factory Rep stated that.

Mine is the same as your ratman. Seems they would have made the motor so the PSI stays a little higher in the summer. I wonder how much hotter it is actually running.

Re: 09 200 HPDI Water Pressure Question (WacoWildcat)

I don't think your motor is running any hotter,or at least very little hotter. When the coolant is already warm(lake water) the thermostats are just staying open,or most of the way open to cool the engine properly. When the thermostats are open, the restriction is reduced hince the lower water pressure.
