Is anyone running a Yamaha 2006 HPDI 225 HP on a 210 Reata?

Is anyone running a Yamaha 2006 HPDI 225 HP on a 210 Reata?

If so, do you experience any prop slip during acceleration at around say 3500 rpms? The Prop is the Yamaha VMAX T1 and it has 3 square exhaust vents on the front of the prop, can they be safely plugged?

    IDEAS?

Not a Ranger boater here but I had a similar problem with a Powertech TR04. It would break lose at higher speeds or if I punched it from a midrange speed. It was not a venting problem. According to Mark Croxton is was a pitch problem. I sent it to him for blueprinting and it works great now. The water rushing over the lowerunit and barrel of that prop should keep it from over venting once it is on plane.

How do I confirm it's not the exhaust vents but rather caused by the lower unit / prop design?

I hate to modify the T1 Prop as I was under the understanding it was specially designed to withstand the high torque of the HPDI product line ?

It was designed just for the HPDI's but, not for your particular set-up. No prop was speciafically engineered for a certain boat/motor combo. Every person looking to get maximum performance ( which you are since you are wanting to improve holeshot ) needs to get their prop modified. I have not had anything done by Mark, but I hear good things about him and it is supposed to only take a few days for complete turn around.

I am well aware that props are not "specifically engineered for certain boat/motor combo", but as I stated earlier, my prop - The T1, was engineered for my HPDI. Before I entertain the concept of modifications, I would like to try and plug the vent holes if they make such plugs available.

hhhmmmmmm... athough I havn't ruled out modifications yet, but I cant see how someone can make a modification without running the set-up first hand - if that were the case then we'ed be back to rediscussing the earlier statement..."No prop was speciafically engineered for a certain boat/motor combo" hhmmmmmmm?

The modifications would be made based on the info you provided us in your first post bt with a little more detail.... like at what rpm you would be blowing out at.... and then when it gets bite again... Or what RPM's you spin at your top speed, and what your top speed is. Sounds to me like your motor would be to high right now, although you will gain top end, you will also lose lower end get up.... it's the tose-up of the situation..... Try posting this in the set-ups board, some one should be abl to help you a little bit more then myself..

Re: Is anyone running a Yamaha 2006 HPDI 225 HP on a 210 Reata? (Scott)

Please do not think I am a boat set-up expert by any means.... but I think set back is good for every boat. If your boat allows ten inches, then I say ten inches it is. In my case my boat allowed 15 inches..... so needless to say 15 inch it is. I know from listening to the others before I bought my boat that the more setback the Blazer could have, the better it ran on top end, and top end only. Jackplates get the prop fresh undisturbed water, there fore allowing maximum bite from them. If the prop is spinning in broken up water, it doesn't bite as well therefore allowing more slip. So to answer your question "Yes" a jackplate would help your over all performance. Would it resolve your holeshot problem, I don't know, and unfourtunatley your boat is not a highly used boat, so there is no readily available set-up info.... To be honest, I would contact Ranger themselves..... But if you are going to install a jackplate, don't get your prop modified until you install the plate. The other thing you should do is use a prop-slip calculator, that sould also tell you what you should do based on how much prop slip you have.

    What's this "prop slip calculator"?

What do you mean engineered for MY HPDI??? Did the yamaha guys tell you they built this prop special for your boat?? If they did I really doubt it. Give Mark all your info and he will get you fixed up, or try a different prop!!

Well, it's 2009 and I have not posted for a while....

    Sorry All..

I continued my quest with Yamaha and they hooked up with me and tried their "saltwater series" prop. - basically same prop without vents as I originally requested and that solved all my slippage problems. This machine pushes the boat like a raped ape!

Re: Is anyone running a Yamaha 2006 HPDI 225 HP on a 210 Reata? (Scott)

    Hi Scott,

I have an 08 210 with a 225 Yamaha VMAX (Non series2). When I was looking for a spare prop I too looked at the VMAX prop. I spoke to Don who sets up boats (I believe that’s his name at Ranger) and he said they tested the VMAX prop on the 210 and it, as you experienced, blows out or slips especially out of the hole and he recommended I stay away from it. This is really a problem with the VMAX prop on the 210 when you have many passengers or gear loaded. The VMAX has larger exhaust ports that are not a good match with the 210 hull. The boat comes propped from Ranger with the Pro Series and through Don’s testing they have found that seems to be a great prop for the 210. I ended up buying a spare that is the same as the prop the boat came with. I was also going to try the merc tempest or fury which are very nice props and can be tuned with plugs, but I did not feel like lake testing different models for small gains. The pro series has great out of the hole torque as well as a punchy mid range. Top end is fine for this boat and I have had it over 60 GPS. With this prop there is no prop slip at any RPM. Ranger does a pretty good job matching a boat to a prop. Seems like a good all around prop so for me it was not worth trying to tweak things for another mph or improve hole shot. If it was a tourney boat I would have tried the merc props. I believe they make better props but not worth it for me. Either way sounds like you like the SWS prop.

    Love the 210……great boat!
