    SHO Battery Issue

Boat: 2012 Ranger 519. Two Gen 2 HDS 8's and one 10. Sonic Hub. Fortrex. 225 SHO.

Problem: fishing tournament and running live well with all above I am unable to crank Yamaha at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Current battery setup for SHO/ Electronics : 2 Optima Blue tops. MCA 1000, CCA 800, AH 50, and RC 100. Dealer hooked them together in tandem. They are being charged by a three bank charger with two banks going to trolling motor batteries and one bank being used to charge the tandem set up mentioned above.

Solution?: considering one Sears Die Hard Platnum. CCA 1150., RC 205. I have been told this should handle my setup and that a lot of fisherman are going with these batteries. Another option is an Interstate AGM. CCA 800, MCA 1190, RC 190, and AH 100. Which one?

Also will my current charger work and will there be any performance issues with it? Will it take much longer to charge? Dual Pro three bank charger.

What battery is everyone using that alleviates this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I too have a 2012 Ranger 519 with similar electronics and was having the same problem. I went with the Sears Platinum which solved the problem. You really should not be having the problem you are with two Optima batteries. I am willing to bet one of your batteries is not getting fully charged. Have you tested each battery after charging to determine the actual charge level of each? BTW, the Dual Pro charger will charge the Sears Platinum battery.

Thanks 519. That was the answers I have been looking for. Any issues with installing battery in the space we have on our 519?

The SHO battery requirements are: CCA 700 MCA 900 RC 220. You only list two batteries and those seem to be for your trolling motor. Of those two batteries neither meet the RC for this motor. Are you also using the same type of battery for starting? If so that's your problem. I don't have an SHO but I run two HB 798's all day with the live wells running with an interstate series 29 for my starting battery and have never had an issue. When you run the big motor it should charge the starting battery somewhat as well. When I get home and put on the charger I normally see the battery still in the 80% charged rate. Either way as others have said you need a bigger starting battery.

Will the Sears battery require a larger tray than the Optimas? If so, will Sears have the tray?

    Thanks.

I went to a sears pm1 on my z519 with SHO, 3 graphs. Works great all day, dual pro charger is fine. Mine fit right in The tray that was there from the factory. May also want to shut off livewells on start up, the SHO seems to take a big gulp of juice to turn over in my experience.

When it comes to batteries, two are better than one. One to do nothing but start the motor and the other to supply current to everything else in the boat. There is a very simple gizmo (Yandina combiner Combiner 100 Sheet) that will allow the motor to charge two batteries at the same time whenever the motor is running but once the motor is stopped the two batteries are disconnected. You can run the second battery completely dead and still be able to start the motor. At which time it will start to recharge the house battery. Simple to install with just three connections to be made.

Here are the latest battery requirements from Yamaha for the VF models.

Hey jethro where did you get the info? The owners manaul I just pulled down indicates the following CCA 700, RCA 220 and MCA 900.

From a Yamaha USA technical exchange document.

Yamaha seems to be a bit confused when it comes to battery requirements.

I also had the the same problem. Z520C, 250 SHO, HDS 12 & 9 and would run out by 1:30. I changed my group 27 Interstate for a group 31 Odessey AGM and have never had the problem again.
