    1985 YAMAHA 150 HP ETLK WON'T START

I am so disappointed. I purchased this boat and motor as a project. Well, it has been just that. I have completely go through the boat and it's fine.

I had to rewire the motor, I installed new fuel pumps, new water pump, and overhauled (cleaned the carbs). With the muffs on, it idled good and would rev up good. Compression was 107 on all cylinders and had spark to all cylinders.

Took to the lake, and it would not fire a lick. I don't know whether I am over choking and flooding it, or for some reason it's not picking up fuel.

While attempting to crank, I removed the engine cover and squeezed the primer bulb until the sediment bowl (fuel filter) was full. I would turn the engine over considerably and it appeared the sediment bowl would empty about 1/3 to 1/2 way. I would prime full again and this was repeated 2 or 3 times until I finally gave up.

When you can get it cranked it runs good on top end. I've only had it out once and I ran it up to 4200. The water was so rough, I did not want to run any faster. However, the idle was very rough, so that's when I removed all 3 carbs and thoroughly cleaned them. The top two were very clean, but the bottom did have some jelly like stuff. I removed all jets, including the idle jets and thoroughly cleaned and blowed out.

Then I put the muffs on and after choking with the manual "on the engine" coke it started up and idled very good.

Then today. Would not fire at the lake.

I don't know whether it's a fuel problem or a fire problem. I checked to make sure I had the ignition safety key hooked up. It was.

I think after I get over this bad morning, I will pull the gas lines off the fuel pumps, turn it over and see if they are pumping. When I installed the fuel pumps, I checked all the lines from where my new fuel line hooks onto the engine all the way to the carbs. All the fuel pump/carb lines were clear and in good shape.

I have new line from the tank fitting to the engine. Is there a check valve in the fitting on the tank?

The boat had set for 2 or 3 years, so I pulled the tank, thoroughly cleaned and blew through the fitting into the tank.

Like I say, the one time I ran it, I ran it for 30 45 minutes at various RPM's up to 4200 and it never bogged or anything, just did not idle good.

Any suggestions. I would like to take it to my Yamaha dealer here locally, but I'm just in a tight money situation and I think it is something, probably, relative simple. I hope.

Thank you, for listening to a very disappointed new boater. I have worked on this boat for 5 months.
