05 225 HPDI, shock treatment and high RPM's??

With my 05 225 HPDI, last year I completed my 5th summer with it! At the end of the 4th summer, oct. 2008, I received the oil pump upgrade and also needed it's first new spark plugs, it was running with a loss of power! Dealer stated there is a lot of carbon and reminded me to use ring free, and I did! It had 60 hours on it! The 2009 summer went well! Last week, getting ready for this season, I check the plugs and noticed a lot of carbon on them! I treated it with ring free shock treatment! I then started to think of the set up, 27p TI, rpm's 5200 tops, motor low on 10" plate! Thinking higher rpm's should help, I put on lower p prop and raised the motor up 1 3/4" to 2 1/4" below the pad on the 05 198 elite Champion! Rpm's went to 5600- today was my 4th time out, now with 20 gallons through with shock treatment, the bottle states min. 60 gallons, I had a loss of power on my 4th trip across the lake!!! It was at top rpm's 5600, it dropped to 5000, but the moment I let up, it came right back up to 5600, then it repeated over again! I went to the landing and put in new plugs that I had! I tryed it again, a few runs it was fine and then it did it again, same thing with the new plugs in! With shock treatment, should I run higher rpm's or does anybody have any info on what's going on??

    Thank's for any help!!

My first thought is how much oil are you going through... perhaps the oil pump needs to be readjusted if the plugs are fouling so quickly. I change my plugs once a year in the spring and haven't had fouled plugs yet. Now it's common knowledge that hpdi's drink oil but that would be my first guess...

You may also want to hook up a small gas tank directly to the fuel line and run a shock treatment that way which would be much more concentrated.

On my Skeeter running the same prop a 27P i get in the 5600 range.. when i went to a 25P i was turning 6000. I would also try the 27P at the height you're at now because it you went up 1 3/4" you may have been too low before... of course water pressure will dictate the best height too so keep an eye on that.

I'm no expert but perhaps someone else can give you a few more ideas.

Thanks John! I did try my 27 TI at that height! I lost lift, speed and steering got stiff! To high!
I put on a turbo TXP 24p, a high running prop, at 2" below and that got the rpm's to 5650 and a real nice ride! I will try higher then that even, just to see!
But i still have to try differant gas or something to deal with that sometime loss of top end power! Is it carbon or not? Filters?

I've also noticed that the steering is a bit stiffer with the 27P compared to the 25P. Although for me i like the 27 and what it gives me. I would like to try a 26P TXP prop I've heard they run well.

When was the last time you changed all the filters... i don't think it'd be that but if it's been a while i'd change them. I change my once a year in the spring but i only do about 40 hours a year living so far up north.

No John, I did not change any filters yet! I have around 85 on the motor in 5 years! I run it today and it ran a little bit better, working the shock treatment, but yes, the filters are next! Did you change them yourself?

I tryed the 26p txp, and it ran the same rpm's (5300) as the 27p TI at 2-3/4" below and at 2-1/2 they both loss lift and went slower! So I sent it back to turbo and they sent the 24p txp, run high prop, that went to (5600) at 2" below, and a real nice ride at 70 gps with a good load! BUT, do I have stuff going on with the motor besides carbon? thanks!

85hours in 5 years isn't too much at all... i've got just over 300 on mine and i live way up here in Ontario.

The fuel filters are easy enough to change. There's the inline filter in the clear bowl, one inside the vst tank (silver tank port side) on the bottom of the fuel pump, and finally the strainer which is about the size of a 35mm photo canister just above the vst tank. There's posts at the top of this forum on how to replace each.

I don't think they are effecting your motor but it wouldn't hurt to change them every year regardless of hours you put on.

Bottom line with props is if you're happy that's what matters... spending $500+ for 1-2 mph is pointless imo... but heck i've bene there done that

Thanks John! Boatownersworld.com was not too bad for turbo's! 349.00 in my front door!

Yes not many hours on motor, but trolling has been replaced! wore the bitch out!

I'll do the filters and post!
