I can not get the thrust washer off, what am I doing wrong?

Hit the side of it with a hammer like a man, rotate and hit it until it comes loose... This is common. Then grease up the contact areas before you install again.

I am not comfortable whacking it like Mike recommends. I bought a gear puller, it works great.

Most auto part stores will loan you one if you do not want to buy one. I prefer to have the right tools for the job. A hammer does not come near my hammer for anything.

Just hit it harder! I was told by a reputable Yamaha tech when I asked this same question. He said "Don't be scared, just hit it harder"
It will come off, takes a few good whacks though.

I have the shop manual and nowhere does it say Âtake a hammer and Âbeat the crap out of it until it comes offÂ![]()
Just because a Âmechanic says this is how it is done does not make it right. Not to offend but I would use the term Âmechanic loosely if this is the instruction given to remove a thrust washer, or any part on an outboard for that mater.

When not working, get a bigger hammer!!
Had a horrible time with mine also. Called my mechanic and he ran by the house. Took a cold steel chisel and sat it in the notch of the thrust washer.....one good thump with a hammer, and it flew off.
Sure it didnt say "Use suitable driver" Gotta love Yamaha manuals.
I used a three prong gear puller and had no problem getting the thrust washer to come off. Cleaned up the shaft and thrust washer real good, used Amz Oil water resistant grease for the install.![]()
