i got a friend that has an 88 yamaha 40 horse jet motor. it is a 3 cylinder. seems the top 2 plugs are firing fine but the bottom plug is only firing some of the time. does anyone have suggestions on where to start?

Maybe check the ground wire on that coil and then check the coil it self.
You gace changed the plug on that cylinder right??

if the coils are the same, you could switch the bottom with one of the other cylinders. That would tell you if its the coil, or something else.
