    250 Series 2 question

    2009 250 HPDI Series 2.

First, from what I understand they idle on 4 cyl..... is this correct? if so that explains why it idles rough when not in gear but when in gear is very smooth. Second, I have a hot foot installed and when I try and give it gas (in neutral) it just acts like it keeps running on 4 cyl. and sounds like it is loading up. When I put it in gear it smooths right out and runs fine..... is there just no way too rev it up while not in gear or is something wrong?

I may be wrong but from what I have read, until the motor is put into gear, it does not engage the other cyclinders. One of the main reasons people suggest idleling for a few minutes before hammering down, in gear that is.

You motor is running as designed! Piss poor design in my opinion but that is the way it should run.

I now always warm up in gear before a long run because of that. I'm not sure why it was designed like that.

it actually drops additional cylinders when you advance throttle in neutral, now your only running on like 3!!!!! your symptoms are normal

I don’t have an hpdi but this is probably an easy fix. There must be a sensor somewhere in the shit linkage that needs be disabled. Not sure what that would do to the rmps in neutral since the ecu thinks the motor is in gear. One other thing, There’s also a safety switch in shift box that prevents the engine start up while in gear. I know some racer like to disable this switch so they can crank the engine in gear or in neutral. Saves the clutch dogs in the gear case.

    Deja Vu eh Connor

It would be interesting to know why yamaha decided it was benificial to idle this way. Does the SHO or 4 stroke engines do the same?

From what I understand it was purely for emission standards/ratings.
