    Yamaha V-Max Carb Owners

I have an 2004 Yamaha V-Max 150. She is a very hard starter in the mornings but once she pops she runs great all day. I have owned the boat for a year. it does have a foot throttle. Any ideas why this happens? If you could provide your start sequence that would be great!

    The carbed motors are easy.

Put the throttle just above idle - in neutral.

Push in the key to choke and turn over.

    Release choke after it starts.

Mine will start to die after 5 - 10 seconds.

Hit the choke briefly when it starts to die.

Purrs like a kitten the rest of the day.

You need to pump up your gas line ball about 5 times before you start the engine.

Make sure you keep the key choke pushed in until it starts. You can also pull out on the choke on the front of the motor.

I also pull the manual choke out. It is so much easier for me to do this. It will crank great the rest of the day.

Do you guys give her much foot throttle? Some say never to touch the gas when starting. I will start using the manual choke. From what it sounds, it works alot better. Also, how often do you guys get the carbs cleaned?

I pump my ball, pull choke on front of motor and just touch the throttle. That thing will fire right off. I used to run my battery down trying to start it

I will give that a try. Does it start and then die and then you push in the choke?

Yes, when it starts to die just push the key in a few times. After you run, no choke required.

I use the manual choke and do not use the throttle at all. I have a hotfoot and do not even sit down in the seat to crank.

When getting the boat ready at the ramp, I pump the ball tight and pull out the manual choke.

After backing in the water, I get in the boat, (do not sit down), I just reach down and turn the key. The motor will fire right off. I then go to the motor and push the choke in. Then I sit down and rev the motor some and let it warm up a little. Then back off the trailer.

    This works great for me.

Like others, first i level the motor off, pump the bulb full, then pull the manual choke. Then finish all the straps and getting things ready. After a few turn overs, it'll crank with no problem.

The electric choke should work just as good if adjusted properly and you have a decent battery.

    1. Pump the ball until hard.
    2. Trim the motor level
    3. Hold the key in (choke on) while turning to the start position
    4. Hold a little gas on
    5. When it starts let go of the choke.
    6. When it starts to die, bump the choke a few times

It should start within seconds even after a 6 month layup if done this way.

If not, something needs to be fixed

Using the choke on the motor, colder weather you can leavr the choke pulled a little longer. Warmer weather it will sputter on you quicker. I just reach back with my net handle and push it in.

Re: Yamaha V-Max Carb Owners (Neilslure)

Since the weather here in Indiana is finally breaking, I took her out Friday. I pulled the manual choke, barely touched the throttle and after a couple turns she popped. She ran for 2-3 seconds and quit. I had to pull the manual choke again and she fired right up after a few turns. Thanks for your help. Starts alot better.

all above good-don't forget to pump it......also auto matic may need to be adjusted pull cowling, push key in, you'll see where it is.....simple to adjust with bracket. And yes, cleaned carbs help with starting and idle.
