They are really good. I used mine for waterskiing had it for 5 years.
You can easily put a standard gearbox on if you want. Just unbolt this one and put the normal one on.
They are supposed to be great in shallow water as they have a lot of stern lift on takeoff.
They do have excellent holeshot.
I set mine to idle at 430rpm to make it go into gear smoother but then it fouled plugs if you idled a lot (so I didn't - I warmed up at 1200rpm)
Benefits - no steering torque/boat listing, better holeshot, better traction, more stern lift.

A friend of mine in Zimbabwe had that setup on a Gambler Intimidator (the "old" 18'). It ran well over 75 MPH and had great holeshot keeping up with the 225 hp boys with ease.
