    lower unit oil ?

I'm replacing my waterpump and in doing so I drained the lower unit oil and noticed I didn't have that much oil in it coming out. It looked to be only a bottle of oil. I changed it last month and more came out then. I know I put a little over 32 oz of oil in it. My question is What happened to all that oil? Is that normal?

    WOW!

That will certainly make you wonder what happened. First off, I doubt you would lose that much oil without getting some water back in to the lower unit. Was there any water in it when you drained it? If so, you've definitely got a bad seal somewhere. More than likely the rear prop shaft seal. If there was no water in the oil then there may have been a miscalculation when you put the new oil in. Maybe you thought you had it full but you didn't.

Bottom line, if the oil was clean fill it up again and run it a couple of times and see what you come up with when you drain it. If it had water in it then it's time to replace some seals.

Re: lower unit oil ? (headhigh)

No water at all in the oil. I just remember filling it til I seen oil come out of the oil level plug. I should of waited for a lot of it to. I figured I didn't have enough in it. Thanks for the info.

Maybe the motor was tilted differently the first time and the oil was sitting to the rear of the lower unit???

The same thing happened to me and it cost me a L\u. Seems the oil came out while in the water while running because it never driped a drop while at home. I trim my motor down when at home so as not to cut my leg on the prop and i never saw a drop. The mech at the shop told me to check it often because it could happen again.
