Control Box Question for 1990 Yamaha - Can it be Fixed / Cost?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a 1990 Yamaha control box? I am able to still use, but when I get to about 3/4 throttle it pops in like its in the neutral position and will not move. I can still move forward/ more throttle. So when I back off I have to squease the release and it slides as normal. It is most likely a cam? I was told and have seen a diagram with all the parts, it would be difficult to take apart and work on. I have two quotes, both at about $500. The control box is model 703 and cost $350. Any help out there? Thanks

What kind of advice are you looking for? How to fix it? If it's worth fixing? I guess it depends on your mechanical ability, and comes down to how much it bothers you. I say get it fixed/fix it yourself. That's me, but I'm a military helicopter mechanic by trade, so I'm all about correcting "discreps" that pop up, and I enjoy tinkering on my boat.

Yes, I would not mind fixing myself if that possible. I was told to be very careful when I take the plate off. Many parts. I also got a price of almost $200 for a cam. I just think these prices sound high. I have not opened it up to look and I am trying to figure out if it would be best to spend the $500 and get it fix. Do these price sound correct? I also thought I would look into installing a hot foot. I may be able to do that without fixing the control panel??? Wonder what kind of cost that would be. Thanks for your input.

Have you looked online, like boats.net? You can search by your model, and they've got the IPL's with P/N's and price right there. They're usually a bit cheaper than a dealer on the street. Not always, but often. (Luckily my local guy is on par with them...)

But check them and see their price, and then add $75-$90/hr for labor.

He may have tried to steer you away from doing it by yourself because he wants to do it.

Kinda like the Power Pole installation. They rank it as a "4 out of 5" for difficulty.....meh, I think not.

Spend the $350 and get a new one, or look on ebay to see if there's a used one for cheap. I may have an old manual for one around here, if you want to see it.

Ok, I just did a quick "google" search for one and found a bunch on ebay. One said "buy it now" for $150.

I just checked on ebay. The one that was buy it now for $150 has no trim. I need trim. There are two new ones with no bids and a buy it now price around $265. The used ones I am alittle worried about getting the correct model, etc. I checked on boats.net. I can buy new for $266. I wonder if I should remove old one and open it to see if I can find the bad part? I can get all parts from boats.net. If I mess it up I could then buy the new. If I change out the whole box, can I leave the current cables and conect to new box? Talk to me. Also what about hot foot and cost?

I would replace it rather than fix it if it was me. $500 just to fix it does sound a bit high. A hot foot and slide mount should run about $200.

The $500 cost would be new control panel replaced and labor. If I can do myself, it would be more like $270. If I open it up and find a part problem, I may be able to fix for very few dollars. Hopefully. I guess I should not worry about messing up the old own and taking it apart might give me an idea if I can replace with new myself. I am just wondering the difficulty of the hot foot? Thanks for your input.
