Bass Boat Prop question, Yamaha

I have a 19' Bass Cat Classic with a Yamaha 175 HPDI. If you have two props, (1) Mercury 24P Fury and (2) 23P Trophy Plus 4 blade and you could live with either prop:
24P Fury, turning 5400 RPMs at +/- 65 MPH and decent hole shot or
23P Trophy, Turning 5900 RPMs at +/- 64 MPH and decent hole shot..........

Which prop would you rather keep and which one is the most efficient?

I rarely run my boats wide open and if I do, it's just to see if everything still works. i am thinking the lower RPM performance would be the best over all for the life of the motor and fuel/oil use.

I started with a 25P M Yamaha and it ran +/- 63 MPH at 5200. I like the Fury and Trophy better on my boat. I am not an experienced chime walk driver, but I have not experienced any chime walking yet, so there may be more performance there if I was a tweeker, which I am Not.

I am leaning to the lower rev Fury. The motor tops out in specs at 6200 RPMs.

Any thoughts?

Most people I have ever talked with about this choose the prop that gets them closer to the max rpms. The theory is you don't want to lug a 2 stoke with too much prop. If they make a 23 fury that might be the ticket for you.

I made a big reply, then realized you weren't worried about going faster, just more efficient. I'd go with the prop that spins easier (the trophy) on your set-up. As was stated above, lugging the engine isn't good!

I started off with a 25m Yamaha 25P prop and the motor was turning up fine, but at a lower RPM. I noticed that Yamaha tested it on a Skeeter with the same prop. The 18.5 Skeeter is a little heaver than my Bass Cat. So the Fury 24P is a little less pitch, so it should not be loading the motor that much. The Trophy Plus is a 4 blade, 23P, but also smaller diameter. The motor sounded different with the smaller prop and high RPMs. I did feel that I fell off plane faster with the smaller prop too. Sort of like I was not getting as good a lift with the 23P. Unfortunately, the Fury is not available in a 23P. I am still trying to sort this out.

Although I don't run wide open all the time (I like to cruise around 4,500-5,000), I want my boat to be able to run as fast as possible, when I need it. I can spin my Yamaha 27 T1 (3 blade) to 6,000 and with half a tank of fuel I can reach 77 MPH.

This 27 T1 has plenty of bow lift, and most 3 blades will give you more of that. I also have a 27 Power tec TRO4 (4 blade) that turns about 6,000 and gets me to 77 MPH, but the bow lift isn't as good. Most 4 blade props will give more lift to the rear of the boat, and it sort of feels like it's dancing on the water (the rear of the boat).

Both of my props are "worked" props, balanced and blueprinted, and the power tec has some REALLY thin leading edges of the blades.

I am not sure if the yamaha T1 v-max prop would work on your engine but it is a super nice prop. I have always liked the tempest and they make a 23. You can usually get a deal on one on the props4sale part of this forum.

My grandson Reid and I ran the Bass Cat today. With the 24( Fury, I was getting 65+ with fishing load and two persons, approx 1/2 tank of gas and empty live well. Reid got it up to 67.09 with out chime walk, but close.

Hole shots ran about 4.5 seconds. 0 to 30 ran about 6.5 minutes. The boat held plane better with the 24 Fury than it did with the 23 P Trophy. The Yamaha 25 M was a little too big for my 175. I am happy with this performance.

What RPM's at wide open?

I think we were touching 5600 RPM. The Trophy 23P turned 5900 and maybe more if my Grandson had been driving, but it was slower and did not hold plane at low speed as well as the 24 Fury. I don't have a Hotfoot control, so keeping the throttle floored with my right hand and steering with my left gets a little hairy. I do have steering wheel mounted tilt/trim and hydraulic jack up/down control stems. I mainly concentrated on watching the speed and less on the tack.

Fixing the trim meter was very helpful as it gave me a reference for the trim setting.
