    motor malfunction

I have a ranger cherokee 118 with a 115 hp yamaha 2000 model. This weekend I was running the motor Idling with it trimmed up quite a bit due to really shallow water. Then all of the sudden my motor started smoking, after taking the hood off I noticed oil coming out the top of the oil tank. The oil pump just kept pumping and was causing the engine to run too rich. There is a float in the oil tank that is the sensor for the oil level, this is what tells the oil pump to deliver more oil, this float keeps getting stuck for some reason, just wondering if anyone else has had any problems like this. Any suggestions, I unplugged the sensor for a short term fix.

    Re: motor malfunction (duckband417)

It was a while back, maybe a year ago, someone else had similar problems with their sensor. I think they said they were able to "clean" it and it worked properly. I couldn't tell you how they cleaned it or how long it worked after the cleaning.

I'd suggest using the search function on the this page and look for "oil level" or "oil sensor". If you can find the post, send an IM to him and ask what he did.
