    2000 ox66 225 tapping@4000 then locked up, please advise...

    Sunday I was running at a decent crusing speed @ 4000rpm and noticed the engine began to tap, when I let off the throttle it immediately shut down, tried to restart and only clicked, took cowling and fly wheel cover off and noticed an oil stain on the starboard head below the middle plug, touched the plug and it was loose, removed the plug and it was beat to death with the electrode smashed into the center electrode, looked into the plug hole and the dome of the piston was dinged up and I could only rotate the flywheel 3/4 either way and it stopped. I am concerned about a couple things one of which is the repair/replacement cost the other is what may have caused this. It has about 265 hours on it and WOT rpm is 5400 at 67mph. I have taken it into the shop and should hear from them thursday or friday but was hoping to get some ideas from BBC so I know what they are talkling about so I don't get ripped off. It is the original engine on a 2002 Ranger 520vx.

    please keep us informed as to the cause of this disaster. I have that same exact engine...I guess someday they all die, though, right?

    I suppose they may all die someday but at 265 hours or so it sure does seem premature. It's not like a $500 riding mower engine. I kept pressing for an answer to the questrion' is there something I could have done to cause it or prevent it and they said probably neither. I'lll have to admit I haven't used ring free for a year but they didn't seem concerned about that either, furthermore I don't recall reading about needing to use it in the engine manual. It kind if torques me that they want $19 a pint for the stuff anyway. I suppose if it prevents $6200 in damages it would be worth it.

    What is everyone else doing about using Ring Free?


    National Boat Mart Indianapolis said it looked to be due to detonation ( what ever that is) because the damage to the piston was around the perimeter of the piston. They suspect a bad or clogged injector. The estimate is for $6200 which includes a rebuilt short block from Hydro-Tec, water pump, fuel injecter and fuel filter. The short block comes with a 1 year warranty.

    I can't imagine that ringfree, or the lack of using it, had anything to do with your engine disaster, maybe bad/dirty fuel could have caused an injector failure...I agree that the price of ringfree is rather high, what does it do exactly anyway?. I have been convinced that seafoam is the equivalent but is to be used in different amounts...I guess as long as the carbon doesn't build up too much, we're ok... I have never ever had an engine failure in my young life, corvettes, high rpms', etc.....waiting...

    Clogged injector? Is this really a common problem, even using RingFree every tankful? I noticed Hydrotech has a new injector cleaing service for $25 per injector. Should this maintenance be performed, or just if we get bad gas? Fact or fiction?

    What year engine, PDI, EFI? HT does wonders for Yams! Is it still under warranty? Soory, didn't see your latest update. I have been using ringfree, with a little extra every so often. When mine was apart, Nathan commented that he could see that I used Ringfree.

    It's a 2000 225 EFI. Un-fortunately no remaining warranty. Any ideas that will get me back on the water by spring for less than $62oo will be great.

    What's the difference in price to trade it for a new HPDI? You have to weigh the two to determine the cost/benefit of repairing the EFI. Don't have any short cuts unless your mechanically inclined. Which I'm not when it comes to trading power heads out.

    Look in the motors for sale section, hydro tec has a rebuilt 2000 225 efi with a phase 2 kit in it and is already broke in by them. Read the entire post I believe the horsepower will be 30 - 50 more.

    I had my 2.6l replace by them, you'll not find anyone to compare with the quality of work they perform.

    How do you find their motors fopr sale section? I can't get any further than phase kits. Maybe I'm not on the right site but I have been using the link posted above.

    You best bet is to call them.... They may even take a trade in towards a bigger, newer, faster, etc.
