Does any of the gears or shafts turn while unit is in neutral. Its making a knocking sound in forward and reverse but while in neutral it knocks but it seems not as bad in neutral. Any help.

Both forward & reverse gears turn with the drive shaft. The dog clutch locks the gear selected to the propeller shaft when you shift. I would have it checked before more damage is done.

Can you say blown powerhead ? When the motor is in neutral, only 4 cylinders are firing. When you put it in gear, all cylinders are firing then. That's what mine did when one of my piston rods broke in two. Nothing ever seized up, but every time the motor would turn over the rod would go up and hit the bottom of the piston = KNOCKING NOISE ! Hope that's not what it is, but it sure sounds fishy !
