    HPDI losing power

Went out for the second time Saturday, and my motor started really hard. Fired about 7 times, but would die. Took off finally, but was smoking much more than normal for about 10 seconds and then cleared up. Warmed up for a little over 3 minutes while idling out, and it jumped right up on plane.

We headed out for our fishing spot, and were running about 51-52 mph when I heard a lot of rattling coming from the back. I thought maybe the new hydro plate had something loose, but I couldn't see anything. Boat could hardly get out of the water, and won't go over 4800-4900 rpms. Idle is rough also, so it definitely isn't running on all 6. Being under warranty still I didn't want to take any chances, so I loaded it up and took it to the dealer.

Fuel problem? Fouled plug? I just didn't like all the rattling I was hearing, so that kinda scared me. As bad as my hearing is, I could really hear it!

I hope that it's just a fouled plug that is making the motor shake the cover a bit...

Sorry to hear. It looks like I've got a good shot at that too. Mechanic called and the computer history shows no abnormalties right up to the last second. He was waiting to touch it until he talked to Yamaha.

No compression on the #2 cylinder. Must be the #2 took a #2!

which one is number 2? Mine was the top portside cylinder. the sparkplug was flattened and had metal shavings all over it.

Not sure which one it is. I'm just going by what the mechanic told me. Hopefully I'll hear more soon. Was supposed to be at the IN/KY rally in two weeks.

How long do you guys let your motors warm up before getting on them? you should be letting them warm up for 5-10 minutes when the water is cold (like it still is in MI).......

Mine done the EXACT same thing in Feb. took it to the dealer and it was blown. Very hard to start, rattle and shake. Then when it would finally come up on plane, it would only run about 4600 rpm. Hope yours isn't but I would put money on it that it's blown. Sorry to spoil your dinner

    Re: HPDI losing power (hudsonjohn)

Got word last night that it is blown.
Had 50 hours on it, and the history showed that I had treated it very well. The break in was a little longer than required, which was intentional for this reason. I didn't want any question about break in if this happened.

Everything is covered by warranty, including a new injector(s). Dealer will do the first two hours of break in, and I told them to feel free to do all of it!

All in all, I am glad that it happened now, instead of at the IN/KY rally! Should be back on the water before then. Not much before, but before.

hudsonjohn - I always let mine warm up per the manual's recommendation of 3 minutes. They don't distinguish between cold and warm water, so I don't really do it differently. I set the up timer to 3 minutes shortly after I start the motor, and when the alarm goes off so do I.

That's terrible guys, hope y'all are back on the water soon!

Pretty good advice about the warm-up periods. I ran an Optimax before this HPDI and it was vitally important to let that motor warm up to approx 130 before you punched it. Any lessons learned that you guys may have would be greatly appreciated. I figure I have about 25 hours on my HPDI right now.
