I need some help YAMAHA VETERANS ... PLEASE !!

I was on the lake this morning... when i got there, i backed the trailer down into the water, cranked the boat just fine, went up lake several miles... fished for a little while, cranked up and went somewhere else. Needless to say, i did this about 4 or 5 times and on the last time, the motor just clicked.... I can hear a relay clicking right when i turn the key on, then when i try and turn the motor over, all you hear is the starter trying to engage.... the battery is HOT, the connections to the batteries are good.... ANY SUGGESTIONS ????

What do you mean the starter is trying to engage? Does it engage and motor doesn't budge or is it making a spinning sound?

No you can hear it click one time, like it's trying to engage...but that's it... it wont even attempt to turn the motor over...

Sounds like its time for a starter rebuild

Sure its possible. Sinse it is only 'clicking', it may be just the starter solenoid.

Gosh, i hope your right.... I know it's under warranty, but this is my first experience with a yamaha, and it's not looking good so far.... LOL.... I have had a johnson and mercury's and this is mind blowing at 4 hours... I have a full tournament schedule this year and can't handle this stuff going on already...

Is shift lever in netural?????? Can you spin prop by hand in both directions

sounds like starter is trying to turn - you said battery is hot? Is that from putting a load on starter but the starter wont turn motor? Is the starter hot?

    Battery should not be hot.

Could the outboard be LOCKED UP? Pull plugs and try again or see if you can spin flywheel with emergency pull cord

Re: I need some help YAMAHA VETERANS ... PLEASE !! (abu-guru)

Yes it is in neutral and the prop will turn.... i meant the battery is charged "HOT"... the starter is air temp... not hot... I"M NOT EVEN GONNA ATTEMPT TO TURN THIS MOTOR OVER WITH A PULL CORD !! LOL... I'll let the dealer fix this problem !! Thanks for the help !! I dont have a torque wrench to tighten the plugs back if i take them out and i know everything has to be to "SPECS"... in yamaha's world...

    Hot oh Cool LOL

Well does sound like maybe the starter. It almost sounded like it was engaging but no budging.

Re: I need some help YAMAHA VETERANS ... PLEASE !! (Blazer210ProV)

I'll put my $$ on the battery, it takes a lot of amps to get that starter to do its job, for grins I'd run a set of jumper cables from ONE of your trolling motor batteries over to the cranking battery and see if it will turn the motor over.

More likely its the battery and/or connections than a practically new starter....

Let us know what you find.

    Peace,
    Don<><

Re: I need some help YAMAHA VETERANS ... PLEASE !! (Champ203)

I already put a charger on the battery and checked it with a meter and it's fine... I did jump to my trolling batteries... NO GO !! The battery is 650 Cranking amps and 520 cold cranking amps... and this battery has cranked it every other time.... I wish you were right, but i dont think that's what it is..!! I'll let you all know tomorrow hopefully.....

Would the gear on the starter happen to be stuck on the flywheel gear?? I had that problem on my old 70HP Johnson. Just a thought.

Either that or your fixing to get a new motor from Yamaha
