    Motor still acting up...

2000 225 OX66. Starts fine the FIRST time and runs WOT perfect, but after a run and a little bit of fishing it will start, sputter and then die. I can keep it running with a hint of pedal and it will run perfect. It won't do this if you shut it down and restart right away, only if it sits for a bit. I am noticing alot of smoke and a strong gas smell , even on the hose. What gives.

I have the same model year, sounds like your fuel pump diaphrams need replacing ours are the white ones, the black ones are the newer version if I recall correctly.Hope this helps.

Is this something I can do myself or should I get a Tech. I have a shop manual and do most of the maintenance myself

WOW! Look at the schematic brake down and you decide,I read on here of a way to test to make sure the diaphrams were the culprit. Can't recall though, you may want to do a search.Good Luck

Pump the primer bulb, If the tear or hole is large enough in the diaphragm the primer bulb will not get firm and your fuel pressure will bleed off into the crank case. A small pin hole will still left you build pressure with the primer bulb but will bleed off into the crank over a short peroid of time, You can remove the two mounting bolts for each pump and turn the pump around and find the crank case pulse hole in the back of the pump, now pump the primer bulb any fuel leaking out of that hole is no good.
