06 175 optimax water pump slinger washer

I've got a 2006 175 opti and I'm replacing the water pump. There is no slinger washer on top of the water pump housing. I can guarantee without a doubt it has never been apart. I've owned it since brand new and it has 14 hrs on it. Local Mercury dealer I bought the impeller from says Mercury did away with them. Is this correct? I'm following Sherm's writeup and they're mentioned in there. Any ideas? Trying to get it together for a trip tomorrow.
    Thanks in advance

Slinger washer is NOT utilized on this model engine.

It is, however used on SOME models... so it's still included in the kit.

Thanks Don! I got it all put back together and had a question. I've not started and ran the boat in gear out of the water before. I know you hear a lot of things out of the water that you don't hear in the water. I thought I could hear a rattle so I killed motor in forward and checked for side to side play in the prop but found none. What I did notice was the prop would free spin approximately 3/4". Where is the free play coming from? Normal or not? On another note, my water pressure went from 1 PSI at idle to 2.2 PSI after the change. Definitely needed one. Thanks again for the help!

You're experiencing the "clutch dog/gear rattle" that occurs when there is no resistance/load on the prop.

Perfectly normal when running on the hose, in gear.
