    2000 150 xr6 question.

A friend of mine has a 2000 Xr6 Mercury that is doing something really weird. The motor will start fine when he first gets to the lake and runs well. But, if he runs up lake and then shuts it off for twenty or thirty minutes it won't start without pumping the bulb and choking it. Even then it is really hard to start. He has almost been stranded the last two trips. Also, when he filled it up with gas the tank built up pressure and spewed gas out of the overflow vent.

    Can anyone help?

Im sure Don will tell you the same thing. CHECK THE FUEL LINES!!!! Ethanol will eat away at the inner lining of older lines and the peices cause a blockage going into the motor and filters. I went through hell with my old Merc 200, New fuel lines, problem solved.

I replaced the bulb and hose. Checked/Re-tightened all the fuel line connections.
That solved the same problem for me.

When I fill up my boat I must hold the gas nozzle side ways so the fuel goes straight into the tank not filling the vent line or it will spit it out when the tank vents.

    THREE Recommendations:

    1. See the following post, and ensure ALL recommended items have been addressed, AT THE SAME TIME:

    2. Ensure engine is at LEVEL TRIM when starting and/or idling.

    3. Ensure that primer bulb is pumped firm before EACH and EVERY Engine Start.

Mine did the same thing. Rplace all the fuel components. Also, priming the bulb is a hey...todays ethanol vaporizes when it gets warm so basically there is no gas in the carbs.
