    225 OPTI Overheat ALARM

Was idleing around and got to shallow . Sucked a bunch of sand and smaLL ROCKS IN THE ENGINE . It quit sending water out the taletail hole . I took out the poppet valve and its all clear , there was a small rock blocking about half of the taletail hole I removed it . The port to the left of the taletail has a 1/2 inch plug I took it out and its hose was full of sand which I removed . I also took off the lower unit and have a new water pump coming , but the old one is still in good shape . The engine got hot and set off the alarm before I noticed the pea hole plugged . What else can be plugged up and need cleaning to stop the overheating ???

?? Themostats ?? Is there any strainers ??
    Thanks Bobby

There's a plastic strainer just inside the block on the port side where a black water line runs from the block to the bottom of the fuel rail. Removing the lower cowl gives easy access. Careful with the water line, if you yank on it you can break the nylon fitting on the fuel rail.

If it was me, I'd pull the compressor end cap and make sure there's nothing caught in it. For good measure I'd disconnect the tell tale line from its outlet fixture and blow it out. But then, I'm kinda hyper.

Start with the thermostats, and the air compressor strainer (as mentioned above).

Go ahead and replace the water pump- all that debris had to pass through it to get INSIDE the engine.

See how it does after this...

Note: Telltale stream MUST be clear at ALL TIMES on this engine. It is the coolant outlet for the Air Compressor's cooling circuit (and if plugged, the air compressor will overheat).

I am still waiting on the water pump but I checked the thermostats and the strainer and they were in good shape . I do belive that my only problem was the piece of debris in the taletail hole blocking the flow to cool the compressor as you pointed out Don . does the compessor have a sending unit to sound the alarm when it overheats ?
    Thanks Bobby

Air compressor is equipped with a sending unit that transmits temperature to the PCM.

The PCM will (in an overheat situation) sound the warning horn, and enact Engine Guardian Feature (limiting available power, based on the severity of the situation).
