Taking a 96 Ranger 462VS on a test ride in the morning. Any input on this motor? Anything I should pay particular attention to? What kind of speed should I be looking at for a 19' boat at 1395 lbs and what RPM at WOT? Thanks for the help.

58-60 gps likely....& very good motor. I'd still get a qualified merc tech to go over the engine for peace of mind (i'd do this on any previously owned outboard).

+1.... have it checked out by a well-qualified Technician, including (at least):
-Compression Test (better yet... a leakdown test)
-Gearcase Check (fluid quality, propshaft runout, shifting quality)
-Maintenance History (and current NEEDS) review
-Fuel/Oil Lines Condition
-Of course- a test run on the water to confirm proper operation
