1998 200HP EFI complete reset ??

I haven't been getting the numbers out of my boat that I did last spring and I posted it in the RANGER forum. It seems I should be getting better MPH out of it. Anyways my mechanic suggested that I take it to a Merc tech out of town and have them do a complete "go through" where they check and adjust everything imaginable and even check the stretch in the cables. Is there a name for this?

I would like to look into it a little more while the boats in storage. Sounds like this procedure costs quite a bit of money also. Shoot this same marina he wants me to take it to charged me well over $300 just to adjust my TPS. Any info on this would be most helpful. I will go to the other forum and copy my numbers and reply them under this.

Re: 1998 200HP EFI complete reset ?? (acslayer)

From RANGER forum:

I posted my "dislike" of my boats performance in the "what are your numbers" forum with no replies. Figured I would mention it here and see what any RANGER owners have for thoughts on it. In the spring I took my boat 2.5 hours away to where I bought it to have the TPS looked on the 1998 200HP EFI merc. It got replaced and then the mechanic took me out for a ride on the rock river near the Quad cities. While he was playing with the hydraulic jack plate and hammering on the throttle he managed to hit around 67.7 mph GPS. My problem all fall, I can barely keep it at 55mph. Same gear, half tank of gas. What numbers should I be able to run with my R91? Granted I watched the mechanic spin 6200 rpms while I try to stay at or under 5900 r's but regardless I figured low 60's should be do-able right?

Hope your mechanic didn't run it to long at 6200 rpm's. my book says 5850 max on a 200 EFI small block.

it wasn't my regular mechanic, this was a mech from where I bought the boat over 3 hours away. I had to take it back to get, can you believe this, a used TPS put on it. Anyways I was with when he hit 67mph and then he backed off. I myself have never had it that fast although when I first brought it back home from there I could do low 60's easy with out red lining it. Now I can't!

Have you made ANY changes to your setup... engine mounting height, jackplate, jackplate height, prop, prop work, added items to the boat (accesories, batteries, tanks, gear, etc)?

Based on your description of the speed back then (67+ with the tech and you in the boat, low 60's with just you)... have you considered taking a friend out that's very experienced in operating this type of hull... let him drive, and see what it does with BOTH of you in the boat?

Another question to consider- have you checked to ensure that there's no WATER built up in the hull?

Re: 1998 200HP EFI complete reset ?? (EuropeanAM)

no extra equipment was added,I have a hydraulic jack plate but I usually leave it alone. As for weight(people), the first time I noticed that it wouldn't hit 60mph was with 4 adults in boat. I figured that was why. Next time out just me and my 125lb wife, still no where near 60mph.

I would also have to say no to water in the hull, I always pull the plug when done for the day.

when you say let someone else drive this type of hull, is it that much different than my old ranger? a 1986 370V, now that thing did 60mph with a 1976 200hp johnson sea-horse on it.

Still looking for the name of the procedure I am being told to have done come spring, and has anyone heard of it before?

well i chased a ghost for awhile on my boat same motor and year 1 size smaller ranger but sent my injectors in for a cleaning had one flooding and issue with another while injectors where getting reset and cleaned i pulled my oil injection , all boxes on motor , i reset the the tps myself when they were back went from 61 mph to 65 still hasnt happy i reset the timing , have to have a gauge for this set my timing to the highest not just #1 cylinder to 24 degrees my boat has run 72 on gps since , i would send injectors off for a cleaning and sync , they are old and bad gas . buy a manual 15 min to set tps could have saved you 300 dollars. also check your fuel lines and pulse pump ,rebuild it ,cheap and easy look for junk in it.

Re: 1998 200HP EFI complete reset ?? (acslayer)

Thanks for the responses.

I'd recommend STARTING with the BASICS:

-Compression test
-Spark Test (including verifying clean, fresh spark plugs
-Fuel QUALITY and Pressure Tests
-All upgrades recommended in this post: http://www.bbcboards.net/zerot...first

Also a good idea to have a Sync-n-Link Proceedure (that's the name you're looking for, BTW) done- INCLUDING TPS adjustment, and verification that you're reaching WOT position.

If ALL checks out in the above... and no other problems are noted, I agree that it would be wise to inspect the REEDS and have your injectors serviced/cleaned (and calibrated as required). The injectors used on this engine series are indeed proned to flooding (especially with today's fuels).
