How to use Power Tune on EFI ?

Even though I have been using the cocktail on all of my fuel, the previous owner didn't always do as such. I am thinking I may have carbon build up in my Mercury 200 EFI. Regardless if I do or don't have any build up, I want to be sure the engine is performing at its very best. I picked up a can of Power Tune. It says on the can for carburated and EFI engines. It gives instructions on how to use on carburated engines, but not EFI. How do I use this? Remove air box and spray in air intake?

DO NOT REMOVE AIRBOX (under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you attempt to run your EFI without the airbox/cover in place).

    The BEST method:

-Run engine until up to temp.

    -Remove all spark plugs.

-Tilt engine ALL THE WAY UP (as high a trim angle as safely possible).

-Spray power tune into each spark plug opening until FULL (a few may not fill due to piston position).

-Wait 5 minutes- REPEAT spraying into cylinders.

-Reinstall spark plugs, allow engine to sit for at least 30 minutes (overnight is GREAT).

-Highly recommend next engine startup be done IN THE WATER... so that as soon as it's warmed up, you can head out for a good-hard run.

Note: Adding a good dose of Mercury Quickleen to your fuel will further assist with carbon buildup.

A word of caution if you have a crankshaft driven oil injection pump. If you tilt up the engine and spray power tune in to the cylinders you can create a problem. The power tune can get in to the crankcase and in to the oil pump drive shaft bushing in the block. The power tune removes any lubrication and can cause the oil pump driveshaft to drag in the bushing and ruin the nylon drive gear. You will then have a major job to replace the drive gear.

    Interesting point, Ernie.

That scenario would (IMHO) be extremely unlikely, due to the actual orientation of the bushing/shaft, vs. any runoff that might pass the piston rings and travel down the cylinder wall with the engine tilted.

If this were the case, the same could occur with induction-side application of the product (and could perhaps be MORE likely as the product passed through the crankcase).

Did you have to replace the bushing when you replaced the drive gear on your crankshaft?

I know nothing about this and my next comment will probably prove that.....LOL.......I have heard the term hydro-lock used somewhere and I thought when you put something like this in the cylinders that you should spin it over without the plugs in it first so that the excess liquid could be thrown out before installing the plugs and starting the motor. It is in reference to this that I thought I had heard it may hydro-lock if you don't do this?

Certainly a good question/comment. Those that have utilized Power Tune are aware that it's a "creeping foam" product. As the foam reduces to "liquid" form, it occupies a very small amount of volume (you're probably looking at a maximum of 1 teaspoon of liquid being installed into each cylinder).

There's certainly no harm in spinning the engine over with the plugs out (after sitting).... just to be safe. However, it would be quite uncommon to fluid-lock an "unmodified" EFI 2-stroke model with the volume that would be utilized.

Thanks for the quick answer.....I think when I had heard the term used, it may have involved pouring a liquid like seafoam into the cylinders. Your explanation makes perfect sense to me even though I'm mechanically challenged.

What's the name of Merc's fogging oil? That's not the Powertune you refer to or is it?

Mercury's "fogging oil" is called "Storage Seal".
