    Break in procedure- worried newbie

    i just had my Vindicator 225 rebuilt with new top and bottom crankshaft bearings, also a new crankshaft (used), new VRO pump and rings. I also did fatten up the #2 jet as advised here.

    Problem is ... OR IS IT ???

    Should I have run it at a conservative RPM fo the first X hrs ?

    What I did, I Ran at 4500-5500 for the first 2 hrs taking 4# 5min breaks in between.

    I then ran 4500 - 5000 for 1 1/2 hrs.

    ALL with an extra 80:1 mixture in the tank with the new VRO also.

    Did not break anything.

    From here is there any advise on extra oil for remainder of break in, or just extra 50:1 -70:1 for the next 5 hrs will be fine ?

    **** SHOULD I BE LIMITING my RPM's for this period ? **** Would a bad break-in procedure robb me of power forever if things don't seat right ?


    I know this may be a tad late, maybe it doesn't matter. Please advise.

    I think around 4-5 hours you can give it short burts of WOT but dont hold it there for long. Untill you get 10 hours on it make sure that you vary the rpms which helps seat the rings and such.

    Well my problem is that I have alrerady taxed it for 2 hrs with a few breaks. I did however vary the RMP alot during this time. BUT the motor was under alot of load because I had a full load,and my trim tabs were partially down and dragging due to rough waters.

    SO, is there any corrective actions I can now do ?

    AND/OR - Going easy for the next 6 hrs and varying RPMs etc, would this be corrective if something was not seated right or seated wrongly by now.

    Putting a load on the motor while breaking it in actually helps the rings seat better. I would just keep it between 35-4500 rpms until you get about 4-6 hours on it and then you can do short burst of WOT. Since nothing happened during the first two hours and I would continue on and not try to re-correct anything.

    DSLY,
    Just run it at double oil for then next 6 hours, vary your RPM's and make sure the rings have been seated. they will seat fine as long as you rebuilder did a cross hatch pattern on the hone job. First 2 hours no WOT next 8 WOT but not more than 15 minutes and vary the RPM's. Make sure you are running 25:1 for the first 10.

    Cross hatch is the pattern that the engine builder/ machinest should have put in your cylinders when they bored or honed the block...

    A cross-hatch is honed into the cylinder in the last step of finishing the cylinder bore. The cross-hatch pattern retains oil for proper lubrication. If the bore was perfectly smooth, lack of lubrication would damage the cylinder bore, pistons and rings.
