    Sportmaster Question

I have a 3 litre merc with a sportmaster the last time I used the boat was about a month ago, today I noticed an oil leak around the prop shaft so I pulled the prop and found the outer seal was blown out of the housing. It looks like there is a inner that is still intact but I noticed some water in the oil. My question is do I replace the seal and oil and go on or do Ipossibly have another issue? Thanks

    Re: Sportmaster Question (450jd)

The bearing carrier must be removed to properly replace BOTH seals (and that is indeed what I would recommend).

WHILE the bearing carrier is out... a visual inspection of the gears, propshaft bearing, etc. are in order.

After seals and bearing carrier are reassembled, a PRESSURE TEST should be done to confirm there are no further leaks.

Refill gearcase PROPERLY. An over-filled gearcase will cause fluid venting, potentially resulting in repeated seal failures.

See the following post for proper fill technique:

    Re: Sportmaster Question (450jd)

Ok I decided to tackle the seals so I ordered a service manual. I am ready to pull the bearing carrier out but I didnt have a puller long enough so I need to get one. My question is that I have 2 of the seals laying on the floor and it looks like there is still another 1 in front of the needle bearing but my manual only shows 2. Am I missing something?

    Re: Sportmaster Question (450jd)

There are two seals on the propshaft (inner and outer) that install into the bearing carrier.

There's also an O-RING on the bearing carrier (down inside the gearcase).

NEVER attempt to remove seals with the carrier installed. This can EASILY result in damage to the propshaft (scarring of the propshaft seal surface).

    Re: Sportmaster Question (EuropeanAM)

I figured out what is going on my inner and outer seals were installed like they should be looks like someone added a 3rd seal in the bearing carrier. Do you think I should add a vent kit Ive had the boat for 6 years and this is my first seal problem. I thought I would put the seals in like there supposed and maybe add the vent kit if needed Thanks for the help

    Vent kit is your call.

We see very few problems, PROVIDED that the gearcases are not "overfilled" (see the following post for important information):

Before buying a new puller you might wanna check this video on how to rig your puller:
