You'll need to get someone to tear down the gearcase, to determine the precise failure.

Several possible causes... and it is imperitive that the correct tools (and appropriate service literature) be utilized during the repair.

We do not usually recommend gearcase repairs as a "DIY" item, due to the extensive special tooling required.

I was stuck in reverse once. The cable had come off under the cowling when I switched gears.

I had mine stuck in reverse once and it turned out that the shift pin(camfollower) in the lower unit broke.

If the control/cables are functioning, and the cable is connected, possibilities would include (but are not necessarily limited to) failures in the:

    -Shift Shaft/Linkages
    -Shift follower
    -Clutch Dog or Crosspin
    -Forward Gear/Bearing
    -Propshaft/Bearings

Unfortunately, that's not uncommon when the crosspin fails.

There are a NUMBER of different gearcases that will bolt up (primarily from other 2.5L models). HOWEVER... there are also different bore sizes, shaft lengths, and GEAR RATIOS.

Always best confirm each gearcase by serial number and/or Part Number.
