    2005 Mercury 200 3.0l EFI Please Help!!

I can sometimes run 20 miles and sometimes I cant even get on plane. No warning sirens or anything but the motor will just shut off like the kill switch has been pulled. Very inconsistent does it at random speeds and may not do it at all from one day to the next. Anyone ever have any of the same problems? It has been in the shop for over 2 weeks and they can't find a diagnosis the computer isn't showing any issues either. Help!!1

I'm sure Don will chime in soon, but if it's been in a shop I would assume they've checked the compression, checked the spark, checked the wiring at the key switch, you know, all the normal stuff.

one thing they may not know to check is the cannon plug under the motor cover, it's the large round plug that connects the motor to the wiring comming from the boat. sometimes the connections in there get corroded a bit and can cause the same kinds of issues yours has.

also, make sure you pump the primer bulb before every start, not just the first one in the morning but every time you crank the motor.

other than that, wait for Don to give you some real help.

P.S. he will need the serial number off the motor

I would recommend that you provide your serial number FIRST... as the 200 EFI (built in 2005) was actually a 2.5L.

I'll be more than happy to assist (regardless)- but it helps immensely if we're both talking about the same engine.

I thought the 2.8l last year built was 04 the 05 200 then went to the 04 225 which was the 3l anyway heres the serial number and thanks for taking the time.

Thank you for the serial number.... which definitely confirms the engine is a 3L model. Perfect example of why the serial number is necessary (Mercury doesn't use "year models"... so the serial number is the only accurate identifier).

I'd be looking specifically at the cannon plug connector (ignition switch harness connector). Disconnect it, clean the pins, CAREFULLY spread the male pins SLIGHTLY with a small pocketknife, then reconnect. Strap the connector in place (use tie-wraps as necessary to prevent vibration/loosening).

Also check the keyswitch and lanyard switch for possible intermittent shorts.

One other possible cause is an intermittent MPR (Main Power Relay). This relay is mounted on the STB side of the engine (inline with the Trim Relays). Should be the "furthest back or aft" relay (Part# 882751A1).

I will definetly check the relay. They have checked the key, kill switch etc but noone has thought about the relay. I will let you know what we find thanks again.
