Motor blown, question on new 225 Pro XS

Well I blew my 96 3.0 225 this weekend and I'm just sick. Had the injectors cleaned, lightened flywheel, added 4 butterfly intake, Boysen reeds, and had it reprogrammed by Simon. Ran it for about 1 minute and blam-rattle heard and then it stopped. Removed plugs and can turn by hand until you hear a rattle in the #2, won't turn any further. The new plugs are clean except for the #2 which has melted aluminum looking deposits on the plug.
Local dealer says 5000 to 6000 grand to start.
I've decided to replace it with a new Pro XS 225 since the 5 year deal is going on. It's going on a 96 Ranger 491 VS. A heavy boat with no aspirations of going over 70MPH. Should I get the TM gearcase or Verado style? Also, any benefit to replacing the control box as well at this time? I will also add the SC1000 monitor system. Thoughts?

TM gearcase is what you want on your Ranger. I just went through the same upgrade on my '99 including Smartcraft. Your existing controls should work fine, the only thing they have to do is get an adapter for the cannon plug at the engine. Yours is 8 pin and the new motors have 14 pins. The smartcraft monitor will need a data cable from the gauge to the engine. There is a plug on the motor for the data cable. Your existing gauges will still work unless you want to convert them too. They will feed daisy chain style from the smartcraft monitor. You can even connect the smartcraft to your GPS via nmea 2000 and it will track miles traveled, fuel consumption, and fuel mileage.

+1 on the TORQUEMASTER, as it provides additional lift (you'll need that).

For Smartcraft, I'd STRONGLY recommend a Level 1 (or Level 2) Mercmonitor kit.

Sorry to hear about your EFI.... sounds like something had already occurred (prior to your repairs/upgrades)- or something wasn't set up properly (such as starting the engine the first time without supplying PREMIXED FUEL).

Well Im not gonna be able to swing the new motor due to cost. What are my options on having it rebuilt? I dont really have any dealers in the area that can do it. All said they send it off. I would like to keep my motor if possible, due to all the upgrades Ive done. Can the whole motor be shipped to rebuilders? If so, how difficult to remove it.
    Any suggestions on rebuilders???

Jay Smith would be a good choice (in your area).

We'd be glad to assist you as well, if you want to send it up here.

Whoever you choose- DO YOUR RESEARCH. Check the REPUTATION of the rebuilder... there are a few "internet" companies out there that are far from reputable.
