115 opti won't go into reverse

Hello, I have a 2004 Opti that will not go into reverse. It goes into forward just fine. It worked fine last fall befoere it was put up for the winter. The only thing I have done was I pulled a power wire past the controls to hook up to the batter for a depth finder I mounted on the console. Didn't check to see if it would go into reverse before i did this. However, I went back and checked that the cable I pulled thru that it wasn't wrapped around anything or causing anything else to be in a bind. When I try to put it in reverse, you can hear it trying to do something on the left side of the motor, it just won't go into reverse. Sorry this is so long, just trying to accurately describe everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would recommend that you FIRST have your SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT checked.

While the cable is disconnected for adjustment, the engine can be shifted "by hand" to confirm that it will actually engage REVERSE.

Also wise to sample the gear lube- look for signs of Water, Milky Fluid, Metallic Fragments, or "Metallic Sheen" in the lube.
