If one upgrades from a merc efi to a pro xs, what all would you have to do? I guess I'm asking is it as simple as a motor swap since you already have merc controls?

I just swaped from a XB to a XS and all I had to have was an adapter harness from boat harness to xs engine..Evrything else works fine

Also wise to plan to purchase a Smartcraft Instrument, such as the MercMonitor.![]()

MercMonitor is a MUST in my opinion. Problem is, there is nothing wrong with the current EFI except it seems like all I do is put gas and oil in it. Just trying to decide on how long I want to keep the boat, which I love. Would REALLY like the idea of having 5 years of no worries.
If its true that a ProXS saves 35% fuel, that would add up quite a bit in 3-5 years...decisions!
Maybe this has been ocvered but what is the up side to converting the efi to a pro xs? besides the gas and oil. I have a 2003 225 EFI that uses a lot of each
Optimax uses approximatly 35% less fuel. I have not noticed any difference in oil useage, just the increased cost of DFI oil.
You'll hug that DFI motor after your fisrt couple of trips with the diference in fuel economy compared to an EFI motor![]()

I have yet to even start mine after rigging it,but am giddy thinking about the gas savings this coming season
my 250 xs sips gas and I dont go through oil at all like my old efi .now my only gas problem is the truck pullin the boat.

You WILL see a 35% (conservative estimate) improvement in fuel economy. Depending on your setup... and driving habits (especially if coupled with an Eco MercMonitor)- improvements can be even higher.![]()
One of the other obvious benefits: Warranty.![]()

so is there a pretty significant power difference between the 200efi-200proxs and the 250efi-250proxs?

The 200 EFI and 200 ProXS comparison is probably a very "unfair" comparison- most 200 EFI's were 2.5L models, while the 200 ProXS is a 3L (it has an obvious displacement advantage... with substantial improvements in the bottom end torque).
250 EFI and 250 ProXS are a little closer in actual performance... the Optimax is obviously "smoother", and has excellent bottom end torque, mid-range punch. Top end comparison would require a "specific" (serial number) 250 EFI to compare with (there have been numerous versions over the years).![]()

this may be totally a dumb question but are you talking about modifying the EFI to be a DFI or changing out the entire motor??![]()
Changing out the entire Engine (new or later model engine).![]()

Seems to me you are going to be "prepaying" for your fuel savings, due to the cost of the new opti. If you run wide open a lot your not going to notice much of a difference. Don't get me wrong I have an opti, but would have bought an efi if it was still being offered at the time. I feel like there's less to go wrong, lighter, and sounds much better-unless you like the coffee grinder idle sound.lol
Depending on where and how you fish, you may be better off with the EFI. Of the four guys I am friends with who own the 225xs and 250XS all of them were stranded and had to have warranty work done in the first year ALL OF THEM! All of them have been stranded twice and had other issues which required be brought to the shop for work. Warranty is nice but it won't help you if you are stranded.
Yes XS motors run phenomenal when right but I am not interested in owning one. As far as WOT fuel economy on 2 properly set up boats there will be no where near 35% better economy. At cruise there will be yes.
I bought a 225 EFI 3 months ago. The guy I bought it from called me last Wednesday, his 250 pro XS has stranded him and been to the shop twice. He wishes he would have kept the EFI. THE same day I fished on a 225 pro XS powered boat that has been stranded and in the shop twice as well.
If you fish tournaments, far from the ramp or live far from a warranty center. The opti in my opinion is not for you.
Although I live in south Florida all the XS motors I am familiar with r freshwater only motors.
Not bashing anyone or their boats, just giving my experience and opinion
Don't get me wrong I am very happy with the performance and dependability of my EFI. And i have learned how to throttle back to conservice fuel. I was use thinking there was something I could do to improve my fuel consumption and up the performance but it sounds like i got what i need. Thanks guys![]()
