3.0 200hp efi cutting out

Just got back from the lake and a little concerned. I fished for a couple hours this afternoon and when I was coming in, I had got on plane was running about 5000rpms and my motor missed or cut out for a split second. The boat never slowed down it kept on running at the same rpms. It did this one time before this past Sept when I was getting on plane. I just wrote it off as old fuel and I added the Mercury Quick care #2 to the next fill up. After that I started noticing the carbon build around the base of the propeller. So is this a fuel thing or a plug thing I have not changed the plugs on it and it may be time to do so. Also I have been using marine stabil in every fill up I saw were Dons new coctail is just quickleen and quickcare so no more marine stabil? Any help would be appreciated.

Chris:

I'd recommend providing your engine serial number as the best starting point. This allows for SPECIFIC identification of your engine, and it's systems- so that advice given is appropriate and "applicable".

Re: 3.0 200hp efi cutting out (cmpky)

Thanks for the serial number.

Best to start with the BASICS:

-Compression test
-Spark Test (including NEW QL77CC Spark Plugs)
-Fuel QUALITY and PRESSURE tests (including fuel pressure LEAKDOWN test)
-Battery Load Test, confirm clean, tight connections with Stainless Locknuts (NO wingnuts)
-Computer Diagnostic Printouts of the Run History and Freeze Frame (Fault) History.

Also recommend you check the CANNON PLUG (ignition switch wiring harness plug) where it attaches inside the engine cowling. Ensure pins are CLEAN... very slightly spread the MALE pins with a small pocketknife, reassemble, and ensure connector is strapped in place (use tie-wraps if necessary).

Additionally, see the following post, and compare against your boat/engine ensuring that ALL recommended items have been addressed AT THE SAME TIME:

I had the same thing happen to me, it ened up just being my fuel water separator filter, I changed it and it has been fine every since.
I know that sounds simple but sometimes overlooked.

Actually, no you shouldn't.

There's a water separating filter inside the cowling of your engine (factory equipped this way).

On the PORT side of the engine, right behind the aluminum VST Housing. Looks much like an oil filter, with a wire connected to the end of the filter (water in fuel sensor).

This filter should be changed AT LEAST Annually (as part of your Annual Maintenance).

Re: 3.0 200hp efi cutting out (STRATOSEXTREME ROY)

What to do now. Changed water seperator filter plugs and checked the gray fuel line with bulb. The gray fuel line was completely ate up and the lining was broke down and coming apart. I replaced all of this with new gray line with blue writing and a brand new merc bulb. I ran the boat this afternoon and it only sputtered once on take off. ( Fished for about 3 hrs) My worry is were did the broke down plastic go. the gray line meets up to a black merc line that goes to what looks like a pump and then it goes into the filter. I guess my question is do I need to clean this pump out. To ensure there is nothing in there? Any help would be appreciated!

Look through the above link again... all suggested items should be addressed AT THE SAME TIME (as noted).

That would indeed include rebuilding the diaphram (pulse) fuel pump... as it's first in line to see the shedding pieces of inner lining.

Re: 3.0 200hp efi cutting out (EuropeanAM)

I took apart my pulse fuel pump last night and there was not any contaminents in it at all. The diaphram was clean with no nicks or tears in it. I put it back together and put it back on the motor. I guess my question is if it is clean and the diaphram looks good. Do I still need to rebuild it?

Re: 3.0 200hp efi cutting out (cmpky)

Highly recommended, regardless. In addition to the possibility of debris, or damaged diaphrams, you have two small plastic check valves that can become damaged, or develop a "cup" shape, preventing proper sealing, and proper function of the pump.

The good news is that Part # 857005A1 comes with the necessary gaskets, diaphrams, springs, spring stoppers, check valves and check valve retainers to completely rebuild this pump. Very inexpensive....
