Bad idld and smoky low RPM for a '92 200XP

Last year I bought a Stratos with a '92 200hp XP Evinrude. It starts OK but has a rough idle (missfiring) and can be smoky at low RPM. It seems like 3500rpm and above it smooths out and runs fine. No jack plate a 24" Raker gets me about 65mph. Compression is consistently 90 lbs. Plugs all look decent (and new). I just replaced the VRO due to having a hard time keeping pressure in the ball, seems to be OK now. Could the low rpm misfire be due to one or more of the carbs low speed jets clogged or just not working properly?? Thanks for any help..

    Welcome to the boards, Jerry!

The gurus will be here around 6:00, and they can fill you in on what to look for, as well as get you the parts if you like. Sounds like it may be an electrical problem, but they will tell you for sure.

Check the cylinder head temp, should be around 140 to 160, also you may need to have your dealer set the low speed mixture on the carbs.

A carb rebuild wouldn't be out of order here as it is a '92. Call Rusty at the shop and ask him what he'd charge you for the rebuild. You'll of course have to take them off and ship them to him then remount them yourself. If you don't feel confident in the R/R then take it to your local shop. Does sound like a low speed idle problem. CM

Thanks! Do you have a rough idea for the cost of carbs rebuild? Also, being somewhat of a gearhead, are there hi-perf reeds that can help and can I have the heads milled to up the HP? Would the jets then have to be opened up? I'd like to be running in the 80's Thanks for any help

Cost of the carb kits and most shops charge 1 hour per carb. As for the milling etc, thats best asked to guys on the Scream and Fly board. CM

Just me, but it sounds like a decarb (engine-tuner), might be needed. Your compression numbers are consistant, but they seem a little low to me, could be due to carbon buildup. Rusty, what do you think?
