    Don, 300x Temp Question

Probably normal, but I gotta ask since my 250 EFI ran a little cooler at speed..........

    2001 300x, OT235158, S/Master, 1.62R, 32P Pro ET Wheel, trimmed at various angles (doesn't change temps).

Water temps while running at 5K RPM around 155 and around 130-135 at low/idle RPM's. Doesn't seem to high but don't really know since it's my first 300x........

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)

Gary I have a 225X not the 300. My temps are about the same as yours. 160ish around 5500 and 140ish when ideling. Don and I have discussed it a few times and it seems to be normal. Will have to wait to see what he says but I would think they would probably be close to the same.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (NAVISPEED1)

155 while running is a little high, mine runs between 118-122 while running and that is 100+ degrees outside and 90+ water temp....mine is anywhere between 120-140 at idle....

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)

No expert that sounds high to me, when on plane in warmer water 70 degrees mine runs 111-113. At idle 120-130. They havea 120 thermostat in them, at least mine does.

My overheat alarm comes on around 158-160

    Gary:

Are you running the STOCK poppet/tuner/adapter plate?

If so.... those temps are a bit high, and I'd be checking the poppet valve (as well as verifying WOT water pressure is within spec).

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)

    Good morning Don,

Poppet is brand new & stock, brand new OEM water pump on 3/2011. Pulled the poppet out and double checked everything inside it, no issues there. I am running a HydroTec Tuner on a stock adapter plate. Water pressure at idle is around 5 PSI and at 5K runs around 13 PSI.

Not that it should matter but I'm running 15" of set back and 1 1/2" above pad.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)

Gary- you might want to check with Eric about this. If I recall, he HIGHLY recommends the Poppet Diverter when utilizing that tuner... it's equipped with a 3/8" restrictor (if I recall correctly).

You may not be able to expell adequate coolant otherwise... affecting your "on-plane" temps.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)

Thanks Don, I'll give him a call today.

One other question on throttle plate/idle, manual states throttle plate should be open .018, is that measured using a .018 dia. pin or feeler at the FWD center of the throttle plate ????

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)

A DRILLBIT or PIN, grasped with a pair of Vise-Grips, can be used to measure the gap at the AFT (rear) of throttle plate.

Highly recommend the vise-grips.... it's a real PIA if the pin/drillbit falls down into the intake.

BTW.... where did you get the .018 spec??? I believe the manual states "Contact Mercury Racing for specification/assistance"....

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)

I'm still trying to understand that damm manual, it's like a game show of hide and seek to find information in. The .018 reference is made in the "Fuel Injection Section 3B", page 14 bottom of the page under "OPERATION", Idle Notes.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)

Found it.... that would indeed be the spec.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (EuropeanAM)

It's kinda funny that the manual doesn't state setting the throttle blade clearence on the "AFT" side over the FWD side either.......is there really that much of a difference between the two (FWD or AFT) or is it the taper on the blade edge that makes the difference ?????? I would think that they're about the same at the position.

Re: Don, 300x Temp Question (Nikon Man)

They're very close.... but we measure the opening on the AFT end, since the blade will be RISING on that end as the throttle is opened.

That makes good sense, I'll check and set it that way.

    Don,

Update.......spoke to Eric and your correct (as usual ), the HydroTec Tuner does require a Poppet Diverter. Thanks for the heads up on this, got one on order...
