Motor runs strong and can be had for a good price, just not sure I want to do it.

I would strongly suggest that you obtain the engine serial number (so that we can have accurate information on the SPECIFIC engines).
Most 2001 models were subject to various updates. Once updated, the engine was "essentially" identical to a 2002 production engine, and equally as dependable.
However... the update campaigns have long since expired... meaning that if the updates were NOT completed, there is a potential "hidden" cost that might not otherwise be expected by you, the purchaser.
Upgrading horsepower isn't impossible.... but it's not cost effective (and to add, it's indeed technically illegal).
