    Lens cleaning (inside)

As some of you know, we use the shiz out of our 75-300 lens. High usage coupled with our outdoor lifestyle has introduced to our lens what no one wants...dirt inside.

Do any of you open up your lenses for cleaning? Or does everyone drop them off at the local Canon dealer and avoid the hassle.

Any advice on this matter would be great. We're about to head out for vacation in three weeks and want this lens ready. Just trying to figure out the best way to get it cleaned up.

    Thanks!

    Re: Lens cleaning (tnjavelin)

Im not afraid of taking much apart and fiixing it but a lens is on the short list of things i would leave to a pro. There is a lot going on in there and im sure a cleanroom type place is the best venue to clean a lens.

I personally have never sent one in to have it cleaned. Ive had only 1 get dirty inside and that was my 50 1.8. The cost to clean it was more than the lens cost so i replaced it instead. If your lens is the $200 model you might want to think about just replacing it if the dust inside is causing a problem. If its not showing up in pics i would not worry about it right now.

    Re: Lens cleaning (RoadrashPaul)

Jonathon I just saw your beach pics in the lounge. Great pics BTW.

Those "spots" you are seeing on your shots is more than likely your sensor dirty and not your lens. I bet from your lifestyle and changing lenses frequently it has let dust/debris in your body and it has settled on your sensor. You can try an air blower to see if that helps OR you can drop it off at a local camera shop and have them clean it for like $40. Again as Jim stated, this is not something I would suggest you do as you can ruin your camera if done improperly.

Thanks guys! I'll definitely have the body cleaned. I did some air blowing and micro fiber wiping on the mirror and viewfinder window inside...but didn't touch the sensor.

The spots on those pics, Paul, seem to only show up with the 75-300. I can even see them through the viewfinder. Not the case when using the 18-55 lens. If it's more than the cost of the lens to clean it internally, sounds like I've nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

    I'll keep y'all posted!
