I'm wanting to get my wife a new camera. Is this a good model versus others, like nikon etc.

I don't personally have any experience with the 60D but I am shooting the 30D which is just a few models down. It would be an excellent camera. Is this going to be her first dslr or does she have some experience already?
She has used the inexpensive digital cameras. This will be her first dslr model. so she would be new to this type. she wants to take pictures and a class.

Ok....I just did a little research to see what the biggest difference in the 60d and my camera are. Here is what I came up with
Higher MP
Higher ISO setting (expandable to 12,800)
1080 video (mine does not do video)
Articulated LCD screen (this would be nice to have on certain shots or doing video)
Like I said above it would be an excellent camera. With it being her first dslr she will have a learning curve. The class she is going to take will help a bunch (or should). This does not mean she can't use the camera though. Just because it has a ton of modes/settings doesn't mean she can just put the camera in auto and take good photos.
I am not a Nikon guy so I can't say if it is better than the Nikon comparible model. Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I have shot with a Nikon D700 and it is a fine camera. There are things I liked better on mine and things I liked better on that one. My best suggestion would be to take her to a camera shop or somewhere that sells both brands, and just play around with some different models. They both have a different "feel" to them. Pick the one that "feels" the best to her and if she is like my wife, buy the one she will actually use or learn to use![]()
Here's a review of the 60D, looks like a nice camera! http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos60D/
one note is that from 50>60 canon went with non-magnesium casing
rebel series canon are non magnesium (and not environmentally sealed)
I've had a D30 (not the 30D) then 10D then 7D (about 10 year span) I still have the 10D, if your wife can handle the weight of a robust body (magnesium) 50D (no video) may be a better choice
if you can get a 7D (out some two years ago) it is one good camera.
Rather then the 60D look at a Rebel T3i
