Assuming you have some version of photoshop, this video explains it way better than I could type it.
As a matter of fact, I'm saving that vid for myself since I've been using my own 15 step, multi layered, pain in the ass way of doing it.
This way is much faster.
Thanks for the Video link Sneezy. I dont have photoshop, but I do have Gimp! Gotta love opensource! I did these. while it did take me a bit to figure out how to do the proper layer to get it to work, once i did, it was REALLY EASY. These were taken with my Iphone, so they are not the best.
1. open image
2. create duplicate layer
3. with new layer selected (defaults to it) Click colors, Map, Gradient Map
4. right click on the layer in the Layers window (if you dont have it, click windows then layers channel and paths) and then click add Layer mask, leave white selected and click add.
then I painted.
notes: also in the layers dockable window, you have 3 tabs at the bottom. click on teh far right one and make sure FB to BG (RGB) is selected. otherwise you can paint some funky things.

Yea, me too. I should have done the rest of the pumpkins, but I closed it in JPG and lost the layers and didnt want to redo.
also did this one. alot more intricate.
