Need some tips and tactics!!!

Ok guys unlike Sam I am starting to reach out and brave the river more this year. Only bad thing is I have no clue how to fish them. I have heard many people say it has to do with current Is there no current everywhere in a river? Any pointers on how to find fish and fish for them on a river such as the Arkansas or a river like it would be greatly appreciated!
