    engine size

I posted in the other form but i was told to come here. I have a 1986 17' bullet with a 1986 slightly modified 200hp on it now. Im getting about 65-70mph WOT. i would like to go faster but the motor is already 50hp over the allowed boat max hp. Im wondering if i went bigger, would there be a weight issue that would affect performance, or rip the transom off

    Re: engine size (17vbullet)

you dont want to put a 3.0 ltr engine on it, but a 2.5 will be just fine. They are teh same weight you have now. (if you have a Merc)

SOMETHING IS BAD WRONG WITH YOUR SET-UP!!!!!!!! You got A LOT more speed to be had with what you got!!!!!! I am running 74 gps loaded with me and gear and 4 batteries with a 21XD and a STOCK 200!!! Give us some numbers on your set-up. Setback, what brand motor you running, do you have low water pickup, what prop you running, rpm at wide open throttle and what is your water pressure at WOT. You should see 80 properly set up with a STOCK 200 I would think. Steve

    Re: engine size (Bryan)

i have a low water pick up on a 1986 200hp mercury black max. water pressure at WOT is about 20-25psi. rpm is about 5650. The prop im running is a 3 blade 21p tempest. I had a 25p 3 blade tempest but it took forrrrever to get on a plane, and when i say forever i mean forever. 10 seconds at least and WOT was only 5000rpm. with the motor trimmed as far as as it can go with just me in the boat (185lbs).

Man you got some serious issues somewhere if all you can turn on that rig is a 21 Tempest. You should be swinging a 28 or so over the hub style prop with 12-15 pounds of water pressure. You also shouldnt need to trim it much more than neutral at WOT. That rig should be running over 80.

Agree with Marty...you should be able to twist the dog snott out of a 21 pitch anything even with the motor buried a foot deep under the pad!!!! I am not sure your motor is being all it can be...any issues with it that you know of?
