    2001 Merc 225

How to test motor oil tank sensor?
I drained the motor oil tank level down until the float on the sensor was at the bottom. I ran the motor on muffs for 10 minutes with NO ALARM.
My Merc check guage beeps at key up. The check guage gives an alarm if I disconnect any motor sensor or short thr temp sensor.

Do I have a BAD oil level sensor?

    Disconnect the oil tank sensor.

On the HARNESS side of the connection, jumper the two wires. Turn the key on.

You should hear a low oil warning.

If your results match, you likely will need to replace the OIL TANK AND SENSOR (the float in the tank may be sticking).

    Thanks.
    The float is not sticking.
    The sensor must be bad.

Hopefully, the sensor is your only problem. However, don't let the fact that you can "hear" or "see" the float move fool you (the tank can swell in such a fashion that the float moves, but doesn't reach it's full travel).

Try the sensor first, of course....
