    Jack plate spacers/trim extender questions

What are they and what do they do and do they go between the transom and jack plate? I am guessing that they are a more inexpensive way of having more set back on your jack plate without having to change jack plates, correct? What advantages and disadvantages do the set backs make? More set back is faster, but slower out of the hole and with heavier loads?

When would you need trim extenders and how do they attach? What are there advantages and disadvantages?

    Thanks guys.

Re: Jack plate spacers/trim extender questions (MercuryMan)

Jack plate "spacers" would be a device that fits on one side or the other of the jackplate, extending the reach of the plate from the transom. They allow for a less expensive means of obtaining additional setback, but also involve an additional connection point, which must be properly torqued/checked on a regular basis. Perhaps the biggest advantages are "less costly" and "easily removed" (in the event that you find the end result of their installation undesirable).

Trim extenders are devices that alter the meeting point between the shorter trim "rams" and the swivel bracket's "striker plate". I do not recommend these devices, as they alter the maximum angle at which the swivel bracket sits within the transom brackets, leaving the potential for engine damage and safety concerns.

A MUCH better solution to obtain "more positive trim", or "more negative transom angle" would be to consider a set of TRANSOM WEGES (wedged spacers that mount between the engine and transom or plate).
