I am looking for some clarification on the new cell phone law that went into place this past weekend. Is it illegal to talk on your cell phone while driving without hands free in LA? Thanks.

Only texting while driving. You can still use a phone, unless you are under 17. I'm not a cop though![]()

*Note: Cell phone use for persons over the age of 17 is still legal in Louisiana.
For any of you guys with children of driving age. Texting while driving is a huge problem. I know 95% of us probably all do it, but the little ones that are fresh to driving to not understand how vulnerable a vehicle is. They feel very safe in a vehicle when they start to drive.
Have them watch this video. It may make them think twice.

Two New Laws You and Your Employees Need to Know about:
Louisiana: Cell phone laws, legislation
Last updated: August 12, 2010
Cell phone, texting news: A law that upgrades Louisiana¡¦s existing text messaging ban to primary enforcement goes into effect Sunday, Aug. 15. This means police can stop and cite drivers for that violation alone.
Legislation that would have outlawed handheld cell phone use by all drivers again failed in the House in 2010.
Current prohibitions:
ÂX Text messaging banned for all drivers. Fines up to $175 (first offense) and then $500. Primary enforcement begins Aug. 15, 2010.
ÂX Drivers under 18 years old may not use wireless devices ¡X including cell phones, text-messaging units and computers ¡X while operating motor vehicles. Primary offense as of Aug. 15.
ÂX Drivers with learner¡¦s and intermediate licenses prohibited from using cell phones unless a hands-free device is attached.
2010 legislation:
Louisiana Senate Bill 9: Upgrades the existing law prohibiting text messaging to primary enforcement status, meaning law officers can stop and cite violators solely for that offense. Also applies to ban on use of wireless telecommunications devices by youngest drivers. Fines would remain at $175 (first offense) and then up to $500. Insurance company notification of offenses. (Louisiana Act 203)
Glad they finely made their minds up.. this has been back and forth to many times with the cell phones.

Do Work !
Thanks guys. It seems as long as you are over 17 you can still use a cell phone. At least that is what I get out of all of this. Can I still buy margarita's at drive thrue windows too?![]()
I almost wish they would ban it all together.....people already don't know how to drive then put a phone to their head and make it worse.![]()

You can still buy a margarita at a drive thru. They have to cover it and not put a straw in it. That way it is considered "packaged". Same thing as buying a beer at the time saver. What you do with it after you drive away is your business.
Talking about cell phones.. they cause some crashes.. no doubt. This year I have worked more crashes involving those dam scooters the old people ride. They can cause people to tear up some chit trying to dodge them.

He will get his just due, the light he ran had cameras and them flashes was going off like a model in a fashion show, so i'm sure they got some great pics of his dumb azz..![]()
The chit that pisses me off is the woman in the suburban, 3 kids in the back, she's yappin on the cell phone, the light is green AND THE B*TCH IS STILL SITTIN ON THE BRAKE!![]()
