    Priming fuel filter

    Hi Don ( or anyone),

Keith here. I just got my fuel filter in yesterday (PN. 35-18458Q 4) for 225 efi. When you say cycle the key on and off several times does that engage the fuel pump to help fill the filter?
Also I read a post a while back when you told someone to put some Quickleen in the filter before they installed it. What does that do and should I do that?
And last, Does the probe that the bullet connector hooks on just screw in to the filter ?

    Sorry for all the questions

    Thanks in advance
    Keith

First.... yes, the probe screws into the filter (remove the plug first). To seal the probe's threads, Mercury recommends the use of "Perfect Seal".

I have used a paste-type teflon in it's place.... but only on the last few threads (you DO NOT want sealant getting INTO the filter).

There wouldn't be any harm in adding a little quickleen to the filter- perhaps 2 ounces or so. Not really necessary.... unless you're trying to decarb you engine (and it's more effective if the engine is already warmed up).

Cycling the key is simply a way to circulate fuel through the PRESSURE side of the system (helping to ensure that when you pump the primer bulb, the filter primes properly). Pump the primer bulb first, cycle the key, then pump the primer bulb again.

And yes, cycling the key "on" activates the electric fuel pump(s) for a short period of time (varies according to engine model).
