Oil leaking from under the cowling 225proxs

Picked up my brand new boat yesterday. It is a 2008 model but has never seen the water. Stoped by the lake on the way home to knock a couple of hrs off the break in period. Followed all rules, never running it above 4K rpms. Got home and had oil running everywhere. Oil was running from under the lower cowling down the motor shaft. Took the cowling off and the entire front of the motor was covered in Quicksilver. I am sure all will be covered under the warranty but could I have caused other damage by running it 2 hrs during break in while it had this problem? Never had any alarms go off.
    Thanks for any advice

No alarms - should be OK. But dealer can check that at the shop.
Remove cover to see if all lines are tight.
    On board tank cap loose?
I had a 225 ProXS that had similar issues after about 50 hrs - located a very tiny black oil line 'think pencil lead diameter' that was not connected, just under the flywheel on port side of motor. You will need a flashlight to see it. Oil was all over the inside the cowling base. Took a small zip connector and reattached. No issues, was a great motor. Running a 2007 250 ProXS now.
Curious if the dealer ran it at the shop during 'make ready' with cover off.
    Good luck.

    Welcome to BBC!

An oil leak of this sort could be coming from ALMOST anywhere.... I'd certainly be looking at the oil feed line connection (just inside the cowling), and the CAP on the oil resevoir, as potential sources. If either of these is the source.... it's unlikely that any damage (other than a great big mess) has occurred.

Also possible is a leak in one of the lines located near the top of the intake/reed plate. On this subject.... the potential for problems is a little different, and has to be addressed on a "case by case".... "what really happened" basis.

Get it in.... have it fixed, and as you've already determined: It SHOULD NOT be run again until the leak is fixed.

Thanks for the welcome message and thanks to all for the feedback. I feel a little better about it. The on board oil res cap is on tight and it does not appear to be the problem. I am going to try to take it in Mon. and I will let you know the deal.
    Thanks!

If for some reason you don't obtain a solution that meets with your approval.... we're less than a day "road trip" away (and will be more than happy to assist you, including any warranty work needed).

We don't care who you bought your rig from.... or what hull that motor's mounted to.

Same problem! Took it in to the dealer today and they found a small oil line under the fly wheel that had popped loose. Mechanic put it back on with a wire tie, cranked the motor with the muffs and said it sounded fine. Hope thats the end of that problem.

    Thanks for the info

I have seen this exact issue reported many times. European AM why does MERC just not fix this with a 2 cent zip tie before shipping? From a loyal and happy V6 Merc guy since 1979.

Good deal. That is a stud motor. Great power and economy. 2 cent fix.
Btw, Run the Merc oil + additives in every tank, name brand fuel and you will be fine.

Good question.... and though I can only "speculate", I suspect the reasoning here was that the "sta-strap" could potentially wear other lines that run adjacent to this one (there is a fair amount of vibration, since it's so near the flywheel), AND, the possibility of the sta-strap breaking, and being sucked into the intake manifold....

However..... IMHO, a top quality sta-strap seems to retain the line well...

Re: Oil leaking from under the cowling 225proxs (Triton19x2)

I had to have the on board oil resevoir replaced on my 225. the cap would not stay tight, would loosen up during operation and spray oil all over the place. The oil slick behind the boat was how we found it,

can't wait to get her broke in and see what she will really do. The 19x2 is a little heavier hull but that 225 on a 19.5 foot hull should move. I actually have a 3+2 warranty on the motor so I am sure I will know if damage was done long before 5 years time.
